Nursery at Winterton Church of England Infants' School

Learning to listen, share and take turns gives this nursery its starting point. In January 2025, the youngest children settled promptly and began developing those social habits. That matters for a child getting used to being part of a group.
The nursery belongs to Winterton Church of England Infants' School on West Street, within The Winterton Federation. Its school context is explicitly Christian: the school places faith first among its federation values, with friendship, forgiveness and peace among its church values. These give families a clear sense of the ethos surrounding the early years.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the curriculum framework, with a nursery long-term plan. Language runs through the learning: in January 2025, children in the early years were learning vocabulary across seven areas. The practical implication is that learning new words belongs across children's learning, rather than being confined to a single activity.
Reading has a named approach too. The federation uses Read, Write Inc. for phonics and gives phonics a high priority throughout the Foundation Stage. Infant teaching spaces and classrooms have sound charts and access to sound mats, providing visual references for sounds and letters.
Established routines also shape the early years. In January 2025, children were learning to follow these routines, supporting growing independence. Alongside the youngest children's practice in listening and sharing, this makes learning how to participate part of their education.
The Rainbow Room provides a physical space for pastoral help and quiet reflection. Across the federation, the pastoral team comprises a Pastoral Manager and two Learning Mentors, alongside seven Mental Health Champions. Each school also has a therapy dog. For families, this places emotional support within a wider school team.
Parents with concerns about their child's mental health can speak to the class teacher or pastoral staff; concerns then pass to a Mental Health Champion for assessment. The federation also provides Early Help support and access to the School Nursing Team and Behaviour Support Services, giving families routes to help beyond the classroom.
For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the federation aims to work with parents to meet children's needs. The infants' office is a contact route for guidance and support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline. The schools follow the admission criteria in the North Lincolnshire Schools' Guide. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
Admissions enquiries go to admissions@thewintertonfederation.co.uk. The infants' school can also be contacted on 01724 732386.
Before-school care. The federation's Breakfast Club admits children from Reception to Year 6, so nursery children are outside its stated age groups. Families needing care before their nursery session should account for that restriction when planning their day.
