At a Glance

PE in the school hall and participation in school events give Barlby's nursery a place in the life of the main school. This is its defining practical feature: children become familiar with more than their nursery class before the move to Reception.

The nursery is called FS1 and has a maximum of 26 places in each session. Morning and afternoon attendance are offered, with patterns ranging from one or two sessions to ten per week. Additional places can also be offered to children turning three during the current term who are on the school admission list, after existing nursery children have priority.

The Nursery Day

Three-hour sessions give the day a clear shape: mornings run from 9:00am to noon, and afternoons from noon to 3:00pm. Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), learning includes adult teaching and opportunities for children to use taught skills independently. This gives practice a place beyond the teaching session itself.

Read Write Inc. is the named phonics programme used in EYFS. Daily phonics teaching is combined with continuous provision, meaning children can return to and practise skills through their independent reading and writing. Adults also share stories daily. The combination connects learning about sounds with hearing language and enjoying books.

Number learning has its own emphasis. At the October 2023 inspection, early-years children benefited from carefully planned opportunities to understand number, and made a positive start in literacy and mathematics. Staff teaching early years were highly skilled. These findings concern the school's early-years provision rather than a separate nursery grade.

Beyond classroom learning, nursery children use the school hall for PE and join school activities and events. The hall adds a concrete space for physical activity, while participation in wider school life builds familiarity with the setting.

Care and Support

GFM provides school meals, with vegetarian and meat choices each day. Nursery dinners are charged separately; families should contact the school for current charges. Allergies and dietary requirements can be catered for, and parents must record them on their child's medical form so the kitchen can respond to those needs.

For SEND concerns, the class teacher is the first contact for immediate issues, with the school SENDCO available through an appointment or email. The school works with health professionals, community organisations and the local authority to arrange support. Parents receive updates about their child's learning during the year and are kept informed about the SEND process. This gives families both a starting contact and a route into further support.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place, even when a child has attended continuously. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Applications go through North Yorkshire's school admissions service.

Familiarity and admission are separate matters. Using the school hall and joining school events help nursery children prepare for the change at four. Before school entry, children are also invited to workshops to meet their teacher and see their classroom; parents have an evening meeting and receive an information pack.

Practical Information

Funded attendance covers 15-30 hours per week. Funded session choices are agreed at the academic year's start and normally stay fixed, with exceptional changes at the school's discretion. Additional sessions depend on places remaining after funded attendance has been taken up and require a contract for each term.

Continuity of extra sessions. Additional places are only agreed for one term, and preferred session choices may not all be granted. Families relying on extra attendance need to account for that uncertainty when planning childcare.

Nursery parents are exempt from the general restriction on access to the school building. Plain uniform is accepted, with no requirement for branded clothing. Parents are strongly encouraged to label every item of clothing clearly. For enquiries or a visit appointment, contact the school office on 01757 703317 or email admin@barlby-pri.n-yorks.sch.uk.
