Conversation, stories and purposeful play give Camblesforth’s nursery its character. Reading begins in Nursery, while the wider early years teaching puts speaking and listening first. This is the school’s own provision on Mill Lane in Camblesforth, with Tiny Steps welcoming children in the September, January or April term after their second birthday.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 28 and 29 November 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play combines activities guided by adults with ideas children choose to pursue themselves. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum brings together language, movement and social development with early literacy, maths, creative expression and exploring the world. In practical terms, children investigate, try things out and persevere with problems. The school aims to develop independence and curiosity through this balance.
Books have a physical home in the Book Nook beside the early years classroom. Puppets and story baskets sit alongside fiction and non-fiction, giving children ways to explore a story beyond listening to it. Stories and rhymes are shared daily, with children joining in familiar refrains; weekly library access also lets them choose books to share at home. Little Wandle is the early years phonics scheme.
Outside learning continues throughout the year and in most weather. Children can make marks and practise writing both outdoors and indoors, while activities develop the small hand movements needed for writing. Maths uses objects, pictures and models to explore number, measurement, space and shape. NCETM teaching for mastery supports planning, and children can apply mathematical ideas during play.
In November 2023, adults’ conversations helped children build friendships, learn turn-taking and become familiar with routines. Staff also adjusted activities using assessments of children’s learning, keeping teaching responsive to their development.
Daily conversations with early years staff give parents a direct connection to their child’s learning. Seesaw and Google classroom provide further ways to share achievements, alongside parent consultations and reports. The teaching structure includes a teacher whose role spans Nursery and Reception and includes curriculum leadership.
Support for additional needs includes concrete classroom adjustments. Across the school, visual prompts, a distraction-free learning zone and sensory resources such as noise-reducing headphones help children access activities. Leeds Communication Trust approaches are also used to reduce communication barriers. Targeted support is discussed with parents, with the SENDCo involved in planning further help where needed. Families therefore contribute to decisions about their child’s support rather than simply receiving an update afterwards.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process. For a September 2027 start, applications open on 12 October 2026 and the deadline for an on-time application is 15 January 2027.
North Yorkshire residents apply online through North Yorkshire Admissions. Families living outside North Yorkshire apply through their home local authority. Keep this application separate from nursery session arrangements: attending Tiny Steps or Nursery does not remove the need to apply again.
Morning nursery sessions run from 9.00am to 12.00pm; afternoon sessions run from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Session requests. The school seeks to accommodate families’ preferences but cannot meet every request. Build childcare plans around sessions that have been confirmed.
For the school’s 15 hours of free weekly provision, children can begin Nursery in the September term after their third birthday. The school also accepts the Government’s 30 hour code for up to an additional 15 hours of free provision.
