Sand and water trays, junk modelling and a purpose-built space for younger children give Bankwood’s nursery provision its own character. There are two age groups: provision for children aged 2 to 3, and Nursery for those aged 3 to 4. The latter has 30 places. Both sit within Bankwood Primary School on Bankwood Close in Sheffield.
For younger children, furniture and resources are chosen for their age, with space to explore inside and outside. This is a distinct start to school life, with communication and everyday independence among the nursery’s priorities. The current school has no Ofsted graded rating yet.
Play shapes the learning. In Nursery, children choose between construction, role play, small-world activities and jigsaws, alongside areas for reading, writing and maths. Sand, water and malleable materials add practical exploration. Adults lead some activities; children direct others. That combination gives children opportunities to follow an interest as well as take part in planned learning, indoors and outdoors.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects care with learning. For the youngest group, the focus is on movement, communication and relationships, including personal and emotional development. These provide the starting points for later learning. Nursery adds literacy, mathematics, creative expression and understanding the world. The nursery aims to help children become more independent and confident before starting school.
Books also connect nursery with home. Families can borrow from the nursery’s home library, and staff offer ideas for talking, playing and reading together. This gives parents a practical way to continue shared learning beyond the session.
Settling starts in familiar surroundings for the two-year-old provision: staff make home visits so they can meet children before nursery begins. Practitioners also work with families on personal and social skills, including toilet training, and model communication. Those everyday care routines are part of the learning, rather than separate from it.
For FS1 children staying a full day, lunch is brought from home. Children entitled to a free school meal receive a cold grab-bag lunch from the school kitchen instead.
Additional needs have a clear contact route: parents can speak first with their child’s class teacher or contact the SEND coordinator. The coordinator’s work includes observations, referrals to outside agencies and helping teachers and teaching assistants plan provision. Support plans have three reviews a year, giving families regular opportunities to contribute to their child’s support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Sheffield Council School Admissions and meet the normal application deadline. Nursery applications go through the school office, so the two processes need to be treated separately when planning the next stage.
Morning sessions run from 8:30am to 11:30am; afternoon sessions run from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. For three- and four-year-olds, the booking choices also include two and a half days grouped at the beginning or end of the week. That gives families a choice between shorter sessions and a more concentrated weekly pattern.
Children can access 15 hours through Free Early Learning funding, with 30-hour provision for eligible families. Funded childcare for two-year-olds is available to qualifying groups. Nursery enquiries and visits are arranged through the main school office: call 0114 239 6711 or email enquiries@bankwood.sheffield.sch.uk. For the two-year-old waiting list, request an admission form there.
The younger provision caters for ages 2 to 3, while Nursery caters for ages 3 to 4.
