Nursery at Brunswick Community Primary School

Two three-hour sessions give Brunswick’s Foundation One nursery a clear daily shape: a morning beginning at 8:45am or an afternoon beginning at 12:30pm. This is the school’s own nursery provision in Woodhouse, Sheffield, with Foundation One also shortened to F1 in its family information.
The practical starting point is a classroom tour video on the nursery’s transition page. It gives families a way to introduce the classroom before a visit. School visits can be arranged through the office, so parents can move from that introduction to seeing the setting themselves.
Conversation and play are the clearest features of the early years day. At the inspection on 31 October and 1 November 2023, Ofsted described curious children, adults making time for conversation and learning supported through play. Children were encouraged to contribute their ideas across the day. That gives talking a purpose beyond answering an adult’s questions: children have opportunities to express what they think.
Indoor space and outdoor areas provided different opportunities for learning. The distinction matters for a nursery child’s day, with play supported across both environments rather than confined to a classroom. These findings concern the school’s early years provision collectively.
The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum page brings together an F1 long-term plan and progression maps covering maths, literacy, understanding the world and expressive art and design. In parent language, those headings connect number work and early reading with learning about the world and creative expression. Art has an F1 progression document too, while the Brunswick Project has an EYFS overview. The nursery’s family letters also include Read Write Inc communications, connecting its early reading information with a named programme.
Parent Hub is the school’s main communication channel, and Foundation One has its own letters page. Its entries include an allergy letter and school dinner information, giving nursery families specific communications about food alongside learning updates.
Across the school, teaching assistants receive continuing training and work together as a team. A SEND coordinator provides a contact for families discussing special educational needs and disabilities, with contact available through the school telephone number. All staff receive safeguarding induction. These are school-wide arrangements that sit around the nursery provision.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Sheffield City Council manages the school’s admissions process; the school’s admission arrangements page directs families to the council’s school-place application service.
Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions. Familiarity with Brunswick’s classroom does not replace that application.
The Foundation One timetable has a morning session from 8:45am to 11:45am and an afternoon session from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Each occupies a distinct part of the day, making the collection time an essential part of planning work and other childcare.
