At a Glance

Sharing, friendships and a gradual start shape the nursery experience at Dinnington Community Primary School. The nursery class is known as F1 and sits within the school’s Foundation Stage. Children start in smaller groups, giving them time to become familiar with the class before the full group comes together.

Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 2 and 3 July 2024. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery. The clearest strengths were support with routines, social development and learning activities that encouraged children to think and persevere.

The Nursery Day

Within the early years foundation stage (EYFS), learning combines developing relationships with building knowledge and skills. In July 2024, staff gave sharing and making friends deliberate attention. For a young child, learning how to take part alongside others is part of the education itself.

Early reading also received close attention through phonics teaching. Staff shaped activities around children’s needs and used questions to extend their thinking. Children sustained their effort and concentration for longer as they worked. These findings describe an early years experience in which adults help children engage with an activity and develop their ideas.

The Foundation Stage timetable starts at 8:45am, with lunch at 11:30am and the school day ending at 3:15pm. Collection takes place at the classroom door. These are Foundation Stage timings, so they should be distinguished from an individual nursery booking arrangement.

Care and Support

Settling begins with a meeting for parents to discuss expectations and practical ideas. Nursery entry is staggered at the beginning of the year, with each child’s starting date given at that meeting. Smaller starting groups make the first experience of classroom routines more gradual. In July 2024, early years staff successfully helped children who found those routines difficult initially.

Parents can raise concerns through the school’s open door approach, while Arbor provides direct messages through its app and Parent Portal. For worries about development or additional learning needs, the class teacher is the first contact. Discussions can involve the Family and Inclusion Team and the special educational needs coordinator (SENDCO).

Across the school, SEND support follows a cycle of assessing needs, planning help, putting it into practice and reviewing its effect. Parents of children on the SEND register are invited to termly reviews. Medical care plans are prepared with parental involvement and, where appropriate, medical professionals; staff working with the child receive them. The school also has staff with paediatric first aid training.

Breakfast club aims to serve hot and cold choices and accommodate dietary needs and reasonable requests. This gives families using the club a food option before the classroom day begins.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Children do not move automatically into the attached school: parents must make a separate application through the normal admissions process. Applications in the normal round use the home local authority’s form; the school also directs parents to Rotherham Council’s Education Admissions Office.

Summer moving up days give existing children opportunities to meet their next teachers. That familiarity supports the change of class. It remains separate from obtaining a Reception place.

Practical Information

For enquiries, contact the school office on 01909 550034 or email enquiries@dcp.wwpat.org. The administration team directs questions to the appropriate member of staff.

Breakfast club begins at 7:30am each morning and requires advance booking through Arbor. Current charges are available from the school office. For families using this service, booking is an additional practical step alongside planning classroom collection.
