Coats, boots and conversations about polar bears give Fox Hill’s early years provision its character: practical independence sits alongside language and discovery. The nursery has 39 places for children aged 3 and 4 and forms the school’s FS1 provision in Sheffield. The wider school grounds include playing fields, a small wood and a multi-use games area.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection of 14 and 15 January 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately graded nursery.
Morning nursery runs from 9am to noon, with the afternoon session following from noon to 3pm. Within early years, children learn through activities that bring together conversation, number knowledge and increasing independence. In January 2025, children discussed polar bears’ food and fur, matched different representations of numbers and practised getting their outdoor clothing on themselves. These are useful foundations: explaining an animal’s needs develops vocabulary, while managing boots and coats makes children less dependent on adult help.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach puts relationships and children’s individual needs alongside learning. Fox Hill aims for each child to feel included and valued. Mathematics uses a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach from EYFS onwards, connecting practical objects with pictures and then mathematical ideas. Art begins in nursery, with children experimenting with materials and making their own work. Exploring and Using Media and Materials and Being Imaginative are its two organising areas, giving creativity a defined place in the curriculum.
Adult interaction is an important part of the early years experience. In January 2025, adults built close relationships with children and used conversations deliberately to extend vocabulary. Children played cooperatively and handled the expectations and routines well. This links care with learning: everyday exchanges become opportunities to develop language, while familiar routines support independence.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), teachers adapt learning challenges and provide additional help where needed so children can participate. The school has a safeguarding team, and its safeguarding arrangements were effective in January 2025.
Lunch brings a practical benefit for families using full days: those nursery children receive a free school meal. Food is prepared on site, with a sandwich or filled jacket potato alongside two hot main choices. Fruit is available daily, and children have drinking water. Nursery lunchtime is 11.30am to 12.30pm, making meals part of the day’s routine.
A separate application. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through Sheffield Council School Admissions under Sheffield’s coordinated admissions process and meet the normal Reception deadline.
Preparation for the next stage is a separate matter. In January 2025, early years children developed language, number knowledge and practical independence, and were well prepared for their next stage of education. Those learning benefits do not secure admission.
Booking patterns include three-hour mornings or 2.5 days grouped at the beginning or end of the week. Children can access 15 hours through Free Early Learning (FEL) funding; 30-hour provision is also offered to eligible families. The nursery timetable gives weekly totals of 15 hours part time and 30 hours full time, so the pattern matters when planning childcare.
Nursery applications and visits are arranged through the school office. Contact 0114 231 3469 or enquiries@foxhill.sheffield.sch.uk; the office opens from 8am to 4pm. Uniform is optional for nursery children, allowing parents to choose whether their child wears it.
