Self-chosen play, nursery rhymes and learning to share give Hucklow Nursery its character. This is Hucklow Primary School’s provision for two and three-year-olds, based at First Start Nursery Centre on Firth Park Road, rather than at the school’s Hucklow Road address. The distinction matters when planning the journey.
Admissions are part time, with an admission count of 120 Funded Early Learning sessions. That figure counts sessions, rather than individual children. At Ofsted’s inspection on 5 and 6 June 2024, the early years provision was graded Outstanding. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Children choose much of their own play, punctuated by brief activities guided by adults. Group size depends on the activity: some sessions bring a smaller group together, while others involve the class. The balance gives children scope to pursue an interest and take part in shared learning.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together seven areas of development. Hucklow starts with communication, physical development and children’s emotional and social development. In parent terms, talking, moving and learning to get along are the starting points. Playing together, sharing and making friends are explicit parts of nursery learning. Ourselves and Our Families is one example of a theme, connecting activities to children’s own lives.
Language was a particular strength in June 2024. Rhymes and poetry played a central part, and children became independent quickly. Behaviour across early years was exceptional.
Outdoor learning has included a tree stump: in May 2022, children explored its surface, described how it felt and tested their jumping skills. During the same month, activities linked to the story Mixed included building dens and towns, experimenting with paint colours and messy play. These dated examples show how physical exploration, language and creative activity can meet in one task.
Support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) began promptly in early years in June 2024. Learning was planned around the needs of children and their families, making the focus on communication especially relevant for children who need help expressing themselves.
Parents can speak directly with the nursery team about questions or concerns. Termly updates share learning information, while boards outside classrooms give details of learning and Words of the Week. These offer a practical connection between nursery activities and conversations at home.
For SEND enquiries, the school’s SENCO can be reached through the office or at senco@hucklowprimary.co.uk. Families whose child has a professionally diagnosed food allergy or intolerance are directed to the school office for relevant information.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a place in Hucklow’s Reception year. Families must make a separate application directly to the local authority’s Primary Admissions Team, in the autumn term before their child’s fourth birthday. The local authority allocates places and applies its oversubscription criteria when there are more applicants than places. Choosing the nursery therefore needs to sit alongside a separate Reception application.
For a September start, children must have turned three before 31 August. Eligible children joining through two-year-old Funded Early Learning provision need an eligibility code and must already have reached their second birthday.
Application forms can be collected at the nursery, the First Start reception desks or the school office. Enquiries go through the office on 0114 242 6736 or enquiries@hucklowprimary.co.uk, which directs families to the relevant team. Prospective parents can also arrange a school visit through the office.
