Children’s interests give learning its starting point at Manor Lodge, while language and familiar routines give it structure. The nursery belongs to Manor Lodge Community Primary and Nursery School on Manor Lane in Sheffield, within its Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good following the inspection on 17 and 18 June 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school. In June 2025, children became independent quickly and joined activities readily: useful foundations for a child beginning to learn alongside others.
Play helps staff decide what to teach next. Foundation Stage adults observe children’s interests and interactions, then develop linked learning opportunities across seven areas. For parents, this means children’s emerging interests influence the learning, rather than simply sitting alongside it.
The Talking and Thinking Floorbook gives that learning a visible record. Kept in the classroom, it lets children revisit experiences and talk about them; parents can look through it with their child before or after school. It provides a concrete starting point for conversations about learning at home.
In nursery, early sound work includes recognising rhyme, noticing repeated initial sounds, and practising joining and separating spoken sounds. These are listening and speaking activities that prepare children for later reading. Language also receives deliberate attention throughout early years. In June 2025, staff helped children broaden their vocabulary and say words accurately. Children used equipment cooperatively and waited for their turn, making social learning part of the day too.
Settling begins with understanding the child. Foundation Stage staff draw on conversations with parents and information from previous nurseries, then spend the opening weeks playing with and observing children to establish their starting points. In June 2025, early years children adapted promptly to routines and settled readily.
Each child has a Learning Journey folder. Parents can view it during the year and contribute information about experiences at home when their child is the focus of assessment. Class Dojo also carries class updates and glimpses of learning, giving families another way to stay connected.
Foundation Stage children have fruit daily, usually in the afternoon, and receive free milk until they are five. Support for additional needs includes an Inclusion & Welfare Team and advice from speech and language therapists, the Autism Team and an educational psychologist. Families can arrange a discussion about their child’s needs by contacting the school.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the normal deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.

Nursery children leave through the playground at the side of the school. That collection point is a practical detail to keep in mind when planning who will collect your child.
