Nursery at Nether Green Infant School

A purpose-built outdoor play space, a sensory garden and regular woodland access give Nether Green’s Preschool a clear outdoor character. This is the school’s nursery provision for three- and four-year-olds, with children able to begin in the term after their third birthday. It sits within Nether Green Infant School on Stumperlowe Park Road in Sheffield.
Capacity is expressed as 26 full-time places, shared between children taking 15 or 30 hours each week. Teaching is led by a qualified teacher, with teaching assistants supporting the provision. For families, the combination means a preschool day within an infant-school setting, with its own classroom and outdoor space.
Play provides the starting point for learning. Indoors, children can build with construction materials, experiment with water and sand, make things in the creative area or use the role-play space. A reading corner and playdoh add quieter and hands-on choices. These activities provide opportunities to practise conversation, develop control of small hand movements and build friendships.
The classroom has permanent activity areas that children can return to, rather than encountering each resource only once. That repetition supports the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum: children build knowledge and skills through revisiting familiar play and learning opportunities. Independence is part of the classroom’s design, alongside creativity and exploration.
Outdoors, the Preschool’s dedicated play area provides space for physical activity and imaginative play. Children also use the sensory garden and regularly access the woodland. Those are distinct environments to explore beyond the classroom, giving outdoor learning a place in the nursery experience.
Sessions have a clear daily structure. Morning provision runs from 8:30am to 11:30am, followed by a lunch period until 12:15pm; the afternoon then continues until 3:15pm. The booking patterns combine these sessions into either a full week or one of two fixed part-week arrangements.
A teacher and teaching assistants form the Preschool team. Additional care before and after the preschool day is managed by school staff familiar to the children, connecting those longer hours with the school setting.
Across the school, two rooms are available for children needing a calmer or quieter space. Accessibility arrangements also allow extra time for children with disabilities to use practical equipment, and alternative ways to participate where an activity needs adapting. These are useful points for families considering how their child will take part.
The December 2023 Ofsted inspection described support for pupils and younger children with SEND, including learning alongside classmates or in the Butterflies room, but identified occasions when more complex needs were insufficiently met. Families considering additional support should weigh that dated, school-level concern alongside the provision described here.
Preschool attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through the Sheffield City Council Admissions Team. The school’s listed oversubscription criteria do not include nursery attendance, so attending Preschool confers no priority under those arrangements.
Familiarity is a separate benefit. Preschool children become accustomed to school staff, surroundings and routines before full-time schooling. That can support the change to Reception, but it does not alter the admissions process.
The 30-hour pattern runs Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 3:15pm. For 15 hours, families choose either Monday and Tuesday plus Wednesday morning, or Wednesday afternoon plus Thursday and Friday. These are fixed combinations rather than freely chosen days.
Preschool follows the school’s term calendar, including holidays and staff-training closures. Funded childcare hours can be used here: the school describes a 15-hour entitlement for three- and four-year-olds and 30 hours for eligible families. Families without 30-hour eligibility may pay for an additional 15 hours, with no charges for those hours during school holidays.
Breakfast Club runs from 7:30am to 8:30am; After School Club runs from 3:15pm to 6:00pm. Both are separately bookable and chargeable. Eligible families can use tax-free childcare for these clubs and lunch cover. Contact the school for current charges.
Preschool applications use a form returned to the school office. Enquiries go to enquiries@nethergreen-inf.sheffield.sch.uk or 0114 2304094.
