Outdoor kitchens, a reading den and space for large construction give Pipworth’s nursery a practical, playful character. Speaking and listening are the main early years priority, with visuals, signing and tailored support helping children communicate with adults and other children. There is plenty to talk about.
The nursery is the school’s FS1 class, within its Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Pipworth takes children from age 3 and is on Pipworth Road in Sheffield. At the inspection on 5 and 6 March 2024, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play combines children’s choices with activities directed by adults. During time spent pursuing their own interests, children can move between the classroom and outdoor learning space. Adults observe play, join in and demonstrate ideas to help it develop. This gives children room to experiment while keeping adult guidance close.
The EYFS brings together communication, physical development and social and emotional learning with early literacy, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. In parent language, learning happens through talking, moving, making, exploring and playing together. Communication Friendly Spaces and sustained shared thinking are among the approaches familiar to the early years team.
Outside, children have sand and water provision, a maths area and space for role play alongside the kitchens, construction area and den for stories, reading and writing. Indoors, resources include musical instruments, art materials, counting equipment and small-world toys. Activities respond to children’s interests and learning needs, so the equipment serves a purpose beyond keeping children occupied.
Early reading begins with Little Wandle’s Foundations for Phonics: songs, stories, games and rhymes. Science is practical too. Scooters and play dough provide examples for exploring pushing and pulling, with children encouraged to put their discoveries into words. In March 2024, adults taught new vocabulary effectively and children applied those words accurately during activities. Language learning connected directly with play.
Teachers and early years practitioners work alongside intervention specialists who help children develop skills towards developmental milestones. Tailored communication work, signing and visual aids offer different ways for children to express themselves and take part.
Visual support also extends to resources families can use at home. A Now and Next board, a communication mat for playing with cars, and pictures for toileting and hand washing make routines and play more concrete. Parents can ask their child’s teacher or a special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) for other resources. For questions about a child’s special educational needs, the school office provides a route to the SENCO team. Staff receive regular safeguarding training and updates.
Reception requires a separate application. Attending Pipworth’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through Sheffield City Council’s normal school admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Nursery attendance should therefore be treated as a choice about the early years experience, rather than an assurance of a later school place.
For children joining Foundation Stage in September, a home visit gives staff and parents time to discuss the child’s needs and questions. The school also aims to contact previous settings to support the move into school. These are transition arrangements, separate from the allocation of places.
A flexible nursery session pattern is offered. The nursery accepts universal 15-hour funding and up to 30 hours for working parents entitled to the additional funding. The eligibility condition matters: the longer funded entitlement applies to qualifying working parents.
