Nursery at Prince Edward Primary School
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
Big questions begin early here: nursery children have explored whether mud helps or harms, using the discussion to think about creatures and their habitats. That gives Prince Edward’s nursery a clear character: children’s curiosity supplies material for learning. The school’s FS1 provision caters for children aged three to four on Queen Mary Road in Sheffield.
Children’s interests help shape the early years curriculum. Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), learning brings together early number skills, books, exploration and growing independence. In March 2024, Ofsted found that children enjoyed learning, acted independently and made a positive beginning with reading. Maths developed through different activities, rather than being confined to one lesson.
Helicopter Stories supports talking and listening, while Floor Books capture children’s interests and help guide what comes next. Talk for Maths Mastery adds another named strand to the Foundation Stage’s work. These approaches give parents something concrete to look for: children’s ideas becoming stories, discussions and mathematical learning.
The wider school grounds include an outdoor mud kitchen, a Secret Garden and growing spaces in the Biodome and allotments. These are school facilities rather than a description of a separate nursery garden. A Foundation Stage family event in June 2018 involved exploring the allotments and playing outdoors, providing a specific example of younger children using the grounds.
Predictable routines support the learning day. In March 2024, children’s behaviour in early years matched the expectations adults set, and the learning environment supported development across the curriculum.
The staffing structure includes a nursery class teacher and an assistant headteacher whose responsibilities cover Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and nursery teaching. Families can reach the school’s SEND coordinators through the main office telephone number or email, giving them a direct route for discussing additional needs.
Parents have practical ways to join in. EYFS workshops run on Thursday mornings from 9:00 to 9:30, with activities for adults and children to try together. Classroom-door posters identify the next activity. The nursery Home Learning programme lasts six weeks: staff bring a character bag containing activities about shapes, colours, sizes and numbers. Visits usually take about half an hour, and the bag stays with the family for the week. Learning can continue with siblings or grandparents too.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal Reception admissions process; the contact page directs applications to Primary Admissions at Howden House. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as two separate decisions.
An Early Years Transition Blog provides a further point of contact around starting school. Transition communication is separate from the allocation of a Reception place.
Morning, afternoon and full-day sessions are offered. The Foundation Stage timetable lists 9:00 to noon, noon to 3:00, and 9:00 to 3:00 respectively; the school-day page gives morning drop-off as 8:55.
For a nursery application, send a message through the contact page with your child’s date of birth. Alternatively, return a printed form or collect one from the office. Enquiries go to enquiries@princeedward.sheffield.sch.uk or 0114 228 1900.
