A morning, an afternoon or a whole day: Sharrow’s nursery gives families several ways to build attendance around their child. Children usually start in the term following their third birthday, with both full-time and part-time places offered. The nursery belongs to Sharrow Nursery, Infant and Junior School in Sharrow, Sheffield.
Flexibility is a defining practical feature. Alongside the regular sessions, families needing particular days can use bespoke attendance patterns. That makes the choice about more than the length of a session: it also allows parents to consider how nursery fits their weekly routine.
Language is a concrete part of the early-years programme. Daily phonics sessions use Jolly Phonics, which brings together games, actions, songs and stories. Children begin by hearing and saying individual sounds, then learn to combine sounds to read words. These different activities give children several ways to practise the same skill, rather than relying only on spoken instruction.
Exploration also has a place. Within the early-years curriculum, Understanding the World connects science with the class topic. Children encounter it through small-group sessions and continuous provision, so learning about the world sits alongside the activities they can access during the session. For parents, this gives a useful picture of a day combining focused teaching with opportunities to explore.
Physical play has a specific setting too. Foundation Stage children and Year 1 share provision of a play area with equipment intended to challenge fitness and encourage children to judge risks for themselves. Movement therefore has a practical learning purpose as well as giving children space to be active.
Spoken language is assessed in nursery. Where children need additional help, individual programmes support their language development; adults also use language frames to model sentence structure. This makes communication support relevant to the everyday task of helping a child express themselves and understand others.
Food support includes the school’s partnership with Magic Breakfast, through which pupils receive free healthy breakfast bagels. This is a school-wide arrangement, rather than a description of the nursery’s full meal routine.
Attending Sharrow’s nursery does not guarantee a place in the school’s Reception. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Choosing nursery and securing the next school place are separate decisions, so parents should plan for both rather than treating nursery attendance as confirmation of a Reception place.
Morning sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoons run from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Most parents use their 15 funded hours for one of these patterns. Children eligible for the extended 30-hour entitlement can attend for the whole day. Additional hours and wraparound care carry charges; contact the school for current charges.
For children aged 3–4, wraparound runs from 8am to 8.45am and from 3.15pm to 5pm during term time. Wraparound and holiday play schemes are restricted to Sharrow pupils. These options extend care beyond the nursery session, which matters when matching attendance to working hours. Enquiries go to the school office on 0114 255 1704.
