At a Glance

Two three-hour sessions shape early education at Stradbroke: Little Teds for two-year-olds and Foundation Stage 1 Nursery for children joining in the term after their third birthday. These are the primary school’s own early years provisions on Richmond Road in Sheffield. Little Teds has 24 places; that number applies to the younger provision, rather than the Nursery as a whole.

Both Little Teds and Nursery are FEL funded. For families, the distinction between the two groups matters: they serve different starting ages within the same school, with morning and afternoon attendance forming the practical shape of the day.

The Nursery Day

Morning children attend from 8:30am until 11:30am, while the afternoon session runs from 12:15pm until 3:15pm. Each gives children a defined block of learning, with separate collection and start times around the middle of the day. Punctuality matters here: families are asked to keep to both ends of the session so that children’s learning is interrupted as little as possible.

World Book Day brought costumes to Nursery in March 2025, while that month’s Red Nose Day celebrations included unusual hairstyles across the morning and afternoon groups. These are concrete examples of children taking part in shared events through dressing up and celebration.

Early years resources cover children’s learning and development, school readiness and establishing routines. The wider curriculum approach includes Early Years and builds knowledge and skills gradually, returning to content in increasingly challenging contexts.

Ofsted’s July 2022 inspection identified an unfinished task affecting curriculum plans spanning early years onwards: revised subject sequences needed to be put into practice and their effect on children’s knowledge checked. That is a dated curriculum concern, rather than a separate Nursery grade.

Care and Support

Daily care starts with a practical bag: spare clothing, a drinks bottle and a raincoat, plus wipes and nappies when needed. Everything should carry the child’s name. That preparation makes changes of clothing and personal care part of the family’s daily planning.

Additional needs are addressed through the school’s SEND arrangements. The Sheffield Support Grid helps determine the level of provision, and children are supported within their class where possible. Support can involve small groups or referral to specialists such as Speech and Language Therapy, depending on the child’s needs.

Parents of children on the SEND register have termly meetings to exchange information and review support. This gives families a recurring opportunity to discuss individual targets with the staff involved. In July 2022, Ofsted also noted that behaviour routines began with children joining at age two, giving the youngest starters an established framework of expectations.

Moving On to Reception

Reception is a separate application. A Nursery place does not guarantee entry to Stradbroke Primary School. Families must apply again through the normal school admissions process and meet its deadline; the Children and Young People’s Admission Team handles mainstream admissions, and application forms can be collected from school.

Little Teds attendance does confer priority for entry to Stradbroke’s Nursery. Keep that benefit separate from Reception: it concerns the move into Foundation Stage 1, rather than securing a later school place.

Practical Information

Little Teds places are part time, with children offered either the morning or afternoon group. The same session times are given for Nursery and Little Teds, so families can plan collection around the relevant three-hour block.
