At a Glance

Water play and construction materials give mathematical language a practical purpose at Waterthorpe: children use words while building and experimenting. Conversation matters here. The nursery forms part of Waterthorpe Infant School on Thorpe Drive in Sheffield, with learning organised through the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the school's inspection on 25 and 26 June 2024. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The nursery-specific findings give parents a useful picture: children became familiar with routines quickly, while adults supported language development and playing together.

The Nursery Day

Play sits alongside purposeful adult teaching. Children can choose activities themselves, while staff also work with the class and smaller groups. Topics are adjusted to children's interests and needs, so planning leaves room for their own ideas. Indoor and outdoor learning both feature in the approach, giving children different settings for practical exploration.

The EYFS brings together learning to communicate, move confidently and manage feelings and relationships, alongside early literacy, mathematics, creative activity and discovering how the world works. At Waterthorpe, stories, songs, visual prompts and everyday conversations put language into that broader learning. Read, Write, Inc. is the named phonics programme within the early years approach, which includes a daily phonics session.

A reading area in each classroom provides a physical place for books. Construction resources and water play offer another route into learning: in June 2024, nursery children were using these activities to practise mathematical vocabulary. Adults also helped children develop communication and cooperative play. These are useful foundations for expressing an idea, listening to another child and joining an activity.

Observation shapes what happens next. Teachers and keyworkers watch children's learning and use it to plan subsequent activities; Development Matters provides a reference for assessment. This connects the next teaching step to what a child can already do.

Care and Support

Preparation starts before nursery. Pre-Nursery groups introduce families to the provision and help parents prepare children for starting. In June 2024, children settled into familiar routines promptly and developed constructive habits for learning. The combination gives families both preparation beforehand and a predictable structure once children start.

Teachers and keyworkers contribute to assessment, and the early years team shares information about children. Learning activities are adapted to individual needs. For parents, this makes a child's starting point relevant to how activities are planned, rather than expecting everyone to approach the same task in the same way.

Breakfast Club adds a distinct care routine for nursery children who attend it. Activities begin in the school hall, followed by breakfast in the junior dining room and further activities before staff take children to nursery. The club is run by qualified staff. Spaghetti on toast with juice is one breakfast example, rather than a promise of a fixed daily menu.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Waterthorpe directs school applications to Sheffield's local authority Primary Admissions Team, which allocates school places.

Preparation for the next stage is a separate matter from admission. Early years staff share their knowledge of children, while observations inform the next steps in learning. This supports educational continuity; it does not secure a place.

Practical Information

Morning nursery runs from 08:30 to 11:30; afternoon nursery runs from 12:30 to 15:30. These separate sessions give families clear collection times to build into their day.

An older nursery offer describes 15-hour morning or afternoon places and a 30-hour arrangement using 28 hours across Monday to Thursday, from 08:30 to 15:30. Under that arrangement, a full Friday uses the remaining two funded hours in the morning, with a charged top-up for the rest of the day. Discuss the applicable booking arrangement and current charges with the school before committing.

Breakfast Club starts at 07:55 and accepts nursery children. Booking and payment are required beforehand, with 24 hours' cancellation notice needed for a refund. For nursery enquiries, contact enquiries@waterthorpe.sheffield.sch.uk or call 0114 248 4943. Visits can be arranged by contacting the school.
