Nursery at Woodhouse West Primary School

Play, teacher-led sessions and outdoor learning shape the nursery at Woodhouse West Primary School. Children join from the term following their third birthday, beginning their school experience within the primary school. A qualified teacher leads each session, with teaching support staff alongside them. That gives the play-based day a clear teaching structure.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 22 and 23 October 2024. This judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Learning through play is the nursery's starting point. Within the early years foundation stage, the October 2024 findings highlighted activities with clear learning purposes and adults who helped children develop the vocabulary connected to their learning. The emphasis is on what children learn through an activity, with adult guidance helping them put that understanding into words.
Outdoor play happens daily, including in colder weather. Children keep named wellingtons at school, and families provide labelled coats, hats and gloves. Practising how to put these on gives children a practical task to work on at home. In October 2024, the early years outdoor area was being redeveloped to extend opportunities for exploration; that describes the work at that time.
Settling begins before the first nursery session. Families are contacted during the preceding term, and a home visit is arranged at the beginning of the joining term. Meeting the nursery teacher in familiar surroundings gives the child an introduction before starting. Children then receive individual start dates after the home visits, allowing staff to support their first steps into nursery. Parents receive a welcome pack and guidance for supporting development at home.
Allergies and intolerances are discussed with staff, with a completed form required before a child starts. Nuts should be left out of food brought to school. Lunchbox suggestions include vegetable sticks, fruit and wholemeal pittas; grapes and cherry tomatoes should be halved. Children can bring a labelled bottle containing water. Prescribed medicines go to the office with the necessary administration form.
For additional needs, the school's support starts in the classroom. Where needs require outside-agency support, parents and carers are invited to review meetings each term. Families can arrange an appointment with the special educational needs coordinators through the office. Wheelchair access, accessible playground space and toilets are practical features for families considering mobility needs.
Separate application. A nursery place does not guarantee admission to Reception. Parents must apply again through Sheffield Council's school-place application route. For children born between 1 September 2022 and 31 August 2023, the deadline for entry in the 2027/2028 school year is 15 January 2027. Keep that application separate from nursery arrangements.
Transition support is a different matter. Children starting Reception are visited in their nurseries and meet their new teacher. Parents are invited to a welcome meeting, followed by a progressive three-day transition period for children during Summer 2. These introductions help families prepare for the change; they do not secure admission.
Morning sessions run from 8:40am to 11:40am, afternoons from 12:15pm to 3:15pm, and full days from 8:40am to 3:15pm. The nursery offers 15 funded hours arranged as five mornings, five afternoons or two and a half days. Those patterns give families distinct ways to organise the nursery week.
Application forms come from the school office. To arrange a school visit, call 0114 2692 602. Before starting, families must return the required paperwork, including the early years funding form and a copy of the child's birth certificate where the child joins in the term after turning three.
Uniform is requested, including a logo polo shirt, school jumper or cardigan and black shoes. Label jumpers and cardigans, as well as the outdoor clothing children need for daily play.
Children start in the term after their third birthday. Each child receives an individual start date after home visits have been completed.
The 15 funded hours can be taken across five mornings, five afternoons or two and a half days. Morning, afternoon and full-day sessions are offered.
The nursery contacts families in the preceding term and arranges a home visit at the beginning of the joining term. Individual start dates follow the home visits.
No. Parents need a separate application through Sheffield Council. For the 2027/2028 intake, children born between 1 September 2022 and 31 August 2023 have an application deadline of 15 January 2027.
Bring named wellingtons to keep at school, plus labelled clothing suitable for the weather. Outdoor play continues in cold weather, so warm coats, hats and gloves matter.
