Stories, songs and new words give Wybourn’s early years provision a clear focus: helping children communicate with other people. The nursery belongs to Wybourn Community Primary & Nursery School on Manor Oaks Road in Sheffield. Its learning sits within The Wybourn Way, the school’s curriculum approach.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 23 and 24 April 2025. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Language takes a central place in learning. In April 2025, early years staff prioritised vocabulary development, introducing words that helped children express themselves. Familiar stories, rhymes and singing encouraged children to enjoy learning those words. For parents, the practical emphasis is on children becoming better able to communicate, rather than simply remembering vocabulary.
The Wybourn Way uses the EYFS Development Matters Framework alongside Cornerstones. The nursery’s projects show what that means in practice: exploring the world, learning about relationships and becoming familiar with classroom routines.
During autumn 2025, nursery learning included Exploring Autumn, Sparkle and Shine and Once Upon a Time. A Manor Farm trip and a Halloween and Bonfire Parent Workshop were also planned for that term. The learning focused on friendship, kindness and the people children could turn to for help.
Spring 2026 brought Starry Night and Dangerous Dinosaur. Children explored nocturnal animals and differences between daytime and night. In summer 2026, Sunshine and Sunflowers provided outdoor learning opportunities, including caring for local plants and animals and learning about sun safety. These dated examples give a concrete picture of the nursery’s project approach.
Settling into classroom life was part of the autumn 2025 nursery curriculum. Learning addressed new routines, making friends and feeling confident within the class. The emphasis connected children’s sense of belonging with everyday expectations about helping others and being thoughtful.
An Early Years SENDCo works alongside the school’s Inclusion Team. Families can contact the team through the main office, providing a direct route for discussing additional needs. In April 2025, children in early years played and learned positively together across differences in need.
Safeguarding concerns can be raised by parents as well as staff. Staff record concerns through CPOMS, which alerts the safeguarding team; serious concerns also require a conversation with that team. This gives families a clear way to raise worries and sets out how staff pass them on.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through Sheffield City Council, with a closing date of 15 January each year. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
Reception application. Parents are responsible for submitting the application. Keep the January deadline in your family calendar even while your child attends nursery.
