Songs, rhymes and early conversation give Shefford Lower School’s nursery its clearest character. This is the school’s own Nursery class on School Lane in Shefford, with early reading foundations built through sounds, songs and rhymes. Speech support has a specific team behind it: Early Years Communication Champions work with nursery children and their families.
Early reading begins with hearing and exploring sounds, alongside singing and rhymes. Ofsted’s inspection on 4 and 5 May 2023 found that nursery children made a positive beginning through these activities. The early years emphasis on language, communication and number also prepared children for their next stage of learning. For parents, that gives a concrete picture of the foundations being built: talking, listening and early mathematical understanding.
Social learning has its own structure. The school’s Learning Behaviours framework starts with sharing, taking turns and recognising feelings, then develops towards collaboration and managing emotions. These are useful everyday skills for children learning to play alongside others. Classroom displays reinforce the school’s behaviour expectations, giving children visual reminders as well as spoken guidance.
Communication support is a distinctive part of the nursery offer. Early Years Communication Champions receive training from Bedfordshire and Luton speech and language therapists. Their work includes recognising early communication difficulties, developing activities, sharing strategies with families and helping with specialist referrals when further support is needed. This connects classroom practice with advice parents can use at home.
For children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), the school uses an assess, plan, do and review process. Parents contribute to planning and reviewing support; progress meetings take place at least termly. Possible support includes visual prompts, adapted teaching, speech and language programmes and help with emotional regulation. Provision depends on the child’s needs.
Physical access includes ramps, powered doors and accessible toilets for pupils and adults in the school building. Families can also draw on the school’s partnership with Shefford Children’s Centre for parenting support and advice about child development.
The school meal arrangements offer a choice between lunch brought from home and a hot meal, with Alliance in Partnership named as the caterer. Early years children are explicitly taught how to handle cutlery, making lunch part of learning everyday independence.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Shefford Lower School. A separate application to the local authority is required during the year your child turns four. Central Bedfordshire handles school admissions, with online, email and postal application options. Families whose child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) must contact the EHC Team instead of using the online form.
The normal application window runs from September before school entry to the following January. Treat this as a separate task from nursery enrolment and apply within the relevant admissions round. Familiarity with the school must not be mistaken for an allocated place.
Nursery applications are handled by the school, and forms can be collected from the office. The nursery application deadline is 20 April for entry that September. After a form is returned, families receive an acknowledgement, followed by further correspondence in the spring of the intended starting year.
For general enquiries, use schooloffice@shefford.cbeds.co.uk or call 01462 629123. Visits can be arranged through the office. Questions about a child’s learning go to the class teacher, while SEND enquiries can be directed to send@shefford.cbeds.co.uk. At collection, the school’s routine requires an adult to check who is collecting before a child leaves.
