Recycled construction materials, cooking and a library bus give Littleton Explorers Nursery a practical, playful identity. This is the nursery class within Littleton CofE Infant School in Shepperton, with a qualified teacher present in each session. Children join from the term following their third birthday, with September, January and April entry points subject to space.
The school has a Church of England character and welcomes families with any faith or none. Explorers combines that school setting with learning led by children's interests.
Play supplies the starting point. Adults develop children's interests through the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Development Matters, connecting their discoveries with early learning. In parent terms, conversation, movement, imaginative play and number work happen together rather than as separate school-style subjects. The nursery describes its Hygge approach as aiming for a peaceful, comfortable atmosphere.
Natural materials introduce different scents and surfaces indoors. Outside, children turn recycled materials into constructions, climb and invent games, giving physical movement and cooperation a practical purpose. Cooking, forest school, sensory activities and experimenting with tools add hands-on experiences. Children also help clear up afterwards. Participation includes looking after the materials they use.
Early literacy starts with listening and rhyme, forming the nursery foundations of Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. Dough disco, threading and large-scale mark-making develop the physical control needed for writing; children begin working on the letters of their names when ready. Counting Principles guide early maths, while play provides opportunities to investigate shape, space and measurement. Adults use activities and conversation to explore children's understanding.
The Library Bus adds a distinctive connection between nursery and home: each child can visit at least weekly with Reading Ambassadors and choose a Sharing Book. In July 2023, Ofsted found that early-years activities connected closely to planned learning and that adults demonstrated positive communication. That makes adult interaction as important as the resources themselves.
Two teachers share the nursery week, supported by a teaching support colleague. The school arranges visits for children before they start, alongside a parent meeting for information and questions. A further meeting after children have begun school discusses settling and learning. These arrangements give families opportunities to build familiarity and raise concerns.
Class teachers are the first contact for pastoral matters, and parents can arrange conversations outside the scheduled termly progress appointments. Families needing SEND advice can contact the school's SENDCo at senco@littleton.surrey.sch.uk. The school adapts resources or learning where possible to accommodate individual needs.
Meals are cooked daily in the school kitchen by Twelve15, and packed lunches are an alternative. The school excludes nuts; families with dietary requirements submit a form so the caterer can accommodate them. Staff undertake safeguarding training annually, and parents can raise concerns with a safeguarding lead or another staff member.
A nursery place does not guarantee admission to Littleton's Reception. Families must make a separate application through Surrey's admissions route at www.surreycc.gov.uk/admissions and meet the deadline for their entry year. Familiarity with the school should therefore remain separate from expectations about securing a place.
