Songs, rhymes and conversation give Saxon's nursery its clearest character: communication and language are a priority from the Nursery Year. This is the nursery within Saxon Primary School on Briar Road in Shepperton. Its term-time model offers 15 and 30 hour places, subject to availability, making the school calendar an important practical consideration for families.
Language comes first. In November 2024, children across the early years enjoyed singing, rhyming, dancing and making music, with confidence in joining in. Staff taught communication and language skilfully from the start of nursery. These activities give young children ways to practise speaking and listening through participation, rather than making language learning solely a seated task.
Mathematics is taught daily throughout the early years foundation stage (EYFS), with planning based on each child's existing knowledge. Children are encouraged to explain their mathematical ideas and compare approaches. For parents, that means early learning includes talking about how children think, alongside developing their understanding of numbers.
Early writing. In November 2024, teaching the first transcription skills needed greater consistency and effectiveness from the earliest stages of learning to write. Families should weigh that concern alongside the clear emphasis on spoken language.
Relationships are an important part of the early years experience. In November 2024, staff and children established positive connections promptly; children were considerate, involved in learning and eager to try. That matters for young children building trust in adults beyond their family.
Support for special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) sits within the school's inclusion arrangements. Parents and children participate in decisions about individual provision. The school addresses needs involving communication, learning, emotional health and physical or sensory development, giving families several routes into a discussion about support.
Child protection procedures apply to staff, volunteers and governors. Where welfare concerns arise, the school may work with other agencies and normally discusses concerns with parents first, unless doing so could put the child's welfare at risk.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application to Surrey County Council, through its online service or a paper form, by January in the year of entry. For September 2025 entry, nursery attendance was not an oversubscription priority. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.
For children joining Reception, preparation includes a parent induction evening around mid-May and a home visit lasting approximately 20–30 minutes. A small-group classroom taster lasts 30 minutes, usually in mid-to-late June; a further morning visit at the beginning of July lasts two hours. These are opportunities to meet adults and classmates, rather than an admissions advantage.
The September start is gradual: about a week of half days is followed by longer mornings including lunch. Staff monitor how children cope and work with parents where a full day proves difficult.
The nursery's 15 and 30 hour places depend on availability. Nursery tours can be booked, giving families a direct opportunity to explore the provision before choosing it.
