Nursery at Sheringham Community Primary School

A qualified teacher leads the nursery at Sheringham Community Primary School, giving this provision for three-year-olds a clear teaching focus within the wider primary school. Its base is on Cooper Road in Sheringham. Morning and afternoon groups each have their own three-hour session, so the ordinary nursery pattern is a half-day rather than a full school day.
Listening comes before learning letter sounds here. Nursery pre-phonics work develops children's ability to hear differences between sounds, recognise rhyme and listen carefully. These are concrete foundations for later reading: the emphasis is on what children can hear and distinguish. Read Write Inc. begins from Reception onwards, so parents should distinguish nursery preparation from the subsequent phonics programme.
The curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework for this early stage of learning. The clearest picture of its teaching is language in action. At the November 2023 inspection, adults in early years used engaging activities to develop communication, and children enjoyed learning alongside them; their relationships with staff were developing well. For a young child, that makes adult interaction part of learning itself.
There are also specific examples of practical nursery learning with families. A June 2022 Nursery Maths Learning Cafe involved a hunt for dots, shape-based hat making and counting sweets onto biscuits. In October 2022, another nursery café brought children and their grown-ups together for activities developing both small and large movements. These past events illustrate how counting and physical development have been made tangible, while giving parents something concrete to join in with.
Settling begins with contact between home and school. Before a child starts nursery, the teacher makes a home visit, and liaison brings together the family, school and previous preschool setting. This gives the adults a chance to share information before the child begins attending.
For families with concerns about learning or development, the class teacher and SENDCo are the points of contact. A Wednesday parent surgery runs from 2pm to 4pm and can be booked through the office, providing a specific opportunity for discussion. Across the school, support can include adjustments to equipment and the environment, small-group interventions and help from the Nurture team, according to need.
Individual support targets. In November 2023, the inspection identified a school-wide concern that some SEND targets lacked sufficient precision, leaving support less closely fitted to individual needs. Families considering nursery support should pay attention to how their child's targets are defined and reviewed.
A nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place at Sheringham. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal school admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat that application as a separate decision, even when your child already attends nursery.
Transition arrangements are a different matter from admission. Before children start Reception or nursery, the school coordinates with home and the preschool setting; visits involving children and teachers are also arranged. These contacts help adults prepare for the child's next step. They do not secure a school place.
The standard offer is five sessions, with mornings running from 8.35am to 11.35am or afternoons from 12.05pm to 3.05pm. Thirty-hour funded provision is offered if parents qualify. The distinction matters for childcare planning: the ordinary session offer and the conditional funded provision are separate arrangements.
Drop-off and collection take place in the Nursery entrance hall, giving families a nursery-specific handover point. To enquire or arrange a visit, contact the school on 01263 823848. A visit provides a practical next step for families considering the setting.
