Nursery at Low Ash Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

A full day or five shorter sessions: Low Ash’s nursery gives families three distinct patterns within the primary school in Wrose, Shipley. Children join in September after turning three. There are 20 full-time places for children eligible for the 30-hour childcare entitlement, alongside six morning places and six afternoon places. Those separate allocations make the session choice an important practical decision.

The Nursery Day

Morning children attend from 8.30am to 11.30am; the afternoon runs from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. For children attending all day, the hours are 8.30am to 3.30pm. Each pattern runs Monday to Friday, giving the week a consistent timetable.

Physical development forms part of early-years learning. Activities emphasise gross motor skills, meaning larger body movements, with intervention groups for children who find either larger movements or fine motor control difficult. This gives physical readiness a place alongside learning with words and numbers.

In January 2025, the youngest children understood mathematical comparisons such as more and less. Outdoor play also calls for practical preparation: children need wellington boots throughout the year, plus waterproof trousers and a coat.

Care and Support

Settling can be adjusted to the child. The inclusion policy allows a gradual start where needed and encourages families to visit before entry. For children joining the Foundation Stage, preparation may involve contact with their previous setting, a home visit or a visit to Low Ash. These are possible arrangements, rather than a fixed package for every child.

Additional needs have a structured route through the class teacher and Inclusion Leader. Pupil Passports set individual targets, with parents involved in termly reviews. Families can therefore discuss both the support being used and what should happen next. The school also has accessible toilets and showers, practical facilities for children requiring additional care.

SchoolPing carries messages and attachments to parents; email and browser access provide alternatives to the smartphone app. Full-time nursery children in Bradford may qualify for free school meals, subject to eligibility. That entitlement requires a separate check.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee admission to Low Ash’s Reception class. Parents must make another application through Bradford Council’s admissions service, using its online system or a common application form. The 2026/27 admission arrangements give no priority for nursery attendance.

For the September 2026 intake, the admissions page gave 15 January 2026 as the application deadline. That cycle has passed. Families should apply through the normal Reception process by the deadline for their child’s entry year.

Transition support is a separate matter. For vulnerable children changing class, the inclusion policy provides for class transition days and, where needed, extra classroom visits. Familiarity can help a child prepare for change; it does not alter admission rights.

Practical Information

The shorter patterns each provide 15 hours a week. Full-time places are linked to eligibility for 30 hours of funded childcare for working parents; Childcare Choices is the eligibility-checking route. A preferred session can be requested, but allocation of that choice is not guaranteed.

Contact the office on 01274 582927 or office@lowash.bradford.sch.uk for a nursery application form. Uniform is optional in nursery. The recommendation is a school-uniform top with black leggings or jogging bottoms, allowing families to combine school clothing with practical everyday wear.

FAQs
