Nursery at Sandal Primary School

Taking turns, learning new words and exploring numbers give Sandal’s nursery its character. This is provision for children aged three and four within Sandal Primary School on West Lane in Baildon, with learning spaces indoors and outside. Families can choose a pattern concentrated at either end of the week, or full days, across the school terms.
Language and early mathematics are central to the learning. In November 2023, Ofsted found that adults helped early-years children extend their vocabulary and that nursery children shared activities cooperatively and practised waiting for their turn. These are useful foundations for joining conversations and learning alongside other children.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) experience includes learning about numbers as well as developing language and social habits. A number of the week gives children repeated opportunities to explore a mathematical idea. In November 2023, the early-years curriculum covered broad learning, with established routines helping children settle into a calm atmosphere.
Feedback happens close to the activity. The school describes early-years adults giving spoken encouragement, sharing children’s work with peers and telling parents about their learning. Stars and stickers sometimes accompany comments. For a young child, that makes feedback something they can respond to while the experience is still fresh. Indoor and outdoor provision gives learning more than one setting.
Settling begins with contact between home and nursery. After a place is accepted, families receive information about a home visit and dates to explore the nursery together. That gives children an opportunity to become familiar with the setting before their regular attendance begins. Full-day attendance includes lunchtime.
Early-years leadership and SEND coordination sit within the same role. The school’s support arrangements include Individual Learning Plans for children on its SEND register, reviewed with parents each term. Families can discuss concerns with the class teacher and SENDCo, giving home observations a place in decisions about support.
Across the school, a dedicated sensory room and nurture room form part of the support provision. Specialist services include Speech and Language Service and the Social, Communication, Interaction and Learning Team (SCIL). These are school resources; a child’s support is planned around their individual needs.
Communication. In November 2023, some parents reported inaccurate or ineffective school communication, sometimes leading to missed events. Confirming important dates and messages is a sensible practical habit for families.
Attending Sandal’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal Reception admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat that application as a distinct task from accepting nursery sessions.
Transition support has a different purpose. Nursery staff plan the move so children become familiar with their next teacher and the Reception surroundings. That preparation supports familiarity; it does not secure admission.
The nursery operates during term time for 38 weeks a year. The beginning-of-week pattern runs from Monday at 9am to Wednesday at 11.45am; the end-of-week pattern starts on Wednesday at 12.15pm and finishes on Friday at 3pm. Full days run from 9am to 3pm, including lunch.
A funded 15-hour place comprises five sessions. Parents sign an agreement recording when and where that entitlement is used. Extra sessions can be booked for a term if space permits and an additional-hours form is completed; payment is required beforehand. Contact the school for current charges.
Applications use the Nursery Admissions Form. Enquiries go to the office on 01274 598115 or office@sandalprimaryschool.co.uk, and school visits can be arranged through the office. Session choice. First preferences depend on space; an alternative may be offered when the requested pattern is full. Families should make childcare plans around their confirmed allocation.
