Seedlings Class gives Shipley's nursery its own identity: a morning of conversation, early reading and learning to manage feelings within a Church of England primary school. Based on Otley Road in Shipley, the provision shares the school's Christian ethos. The school describes respect, forgiveness and inclusivity as values shaping its work.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 14 and 15 September 2022. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery. For families, the distinctive combination is a short morning session and participation in the school's learning and support structures.
The morning starts at 8.50am and finishes at 11.50am. Seedlings follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with seven connected areas of learning. In parent language, this brings together talking, relationships, movement, reading, number, creativity and discovering the world. Conversation and opportunities to practise new vocabulary give children ways to express their ideas and understand others.
Physical learning includes movements that build strength and coordination, alongside smaller hand movements that prepare children for writing. Number learning develops the foundations for later mathematics. Exploring the surrounding world and community sits alongside creative work that develops imagination, so the curriculum extends beyond early literacy and counting.
Books have a concrete place in the week. Friday is Seedlings' library day, and children across the school borrow a book to enjoy with an adult at home. Nursery adults introduce stories and early phonics foundations. This gives families something to share together beyond the classroom.
Zones of Regulation starts in nursery. Children learn to recognise emotions and practise strategies for handling difficult feelings; the approach is used in everyday classroom interactions. It gives adults and children shared language for discussing how they feel.
SEND support includes classroom resources children can handle and additional help within the EYFS. The school uses an assess, plan, do, review cycle, with communication between families and staff part of its approach. Children with identified needs receive achievable short-term targets, making their next steps more specific.
The Orchard is a school support provision for some children on the SEND register, chiefly those with speech, language and communication difficulties, including autism. Access depends on whether the provision is appropriate for the child. It is a school resource, rather than an automatic nursery placement.
Parents can raise safeguarding concerns through a reporting form or contact the office and request the safeguarding team. That provides a direct route for sharing a worry about a child.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. For Shipley, the Reception enquiry route directs families to BDAT admissions information. Treat choosing Seedlings and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
The 8.50am to 11.50am session requires collection before midday, an important consideration when arranging work or other childcare. Nursery enquiries go through the school office: email office@shipley.bdat-academies.org or telephone 01274 583 900.
Uniform includes a purple jumper or cardigan, navy polo shirt and black or navy trousers or skirt, with black shoes. Nursery children do not need a PE kit. Clothing should carry the child's name, helping staff return items to the right family.
