Nursery at Sidmouth Church of England (VA) Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Stories, familiar rhymes and learning to express an idea give Sidmouth’s nursery its clearest character. Children can join from age two, within the nursery provision of Sidmouth Church of England (VA) Primary School. The nursery uses the Vicarage Road entrance, where the gates reopen specifically for nursery children at 8:45.

Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 4 and 5 February 2025. That judgement covers the early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.

The Nursery Day

Language gives the learning a clear purpose. In February 2025, early years staff helped children choose accurate words when explaining themselves. Nursery children listened to stories and took part in familiar rhymes, building foundations for reading later. For a parent, these are concrete examples of learning through listening, speaking and joining in, rather than a day defined only by preparation for formal lessons.

The early years foundation stage (EYFS) here also includes learning alongside other children. From the early years, children practise collaborating, so their learning includes how to work with someone else as well as how to communicate an idea. These social and language experiences connect: expressing themselves helps children take part, while working together gives that communication a practical purpose.

Care and Support

For children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), support is organised through individual My Plans. Parents contribute information and discuss the planned help, giving families a part in shaping support around their child. Teachers oversee the work, while team leaders oversee additional support and progress.

Speech and language assessments, concerns raised by parents and liaison with a previous setting are among the ways additional needs can be identified. Parents should first speak to their child’s teacher; the EYFS team leader and the Inclusion and Safeguarding Lead provide further routes for discussing concerns.

Communication has a defined rhythm for families receiving SEND support. Teachers meet parents at least termly to discuss needs, help and progress, alongside the usual parents’ evening. Additional meetings can be arranged at a parent’s request. Support can include speech and language work or physiotherapy when directed by health professionals, with teaching assistants involved where appropriate. This gives families specific people and processes through which to discuss their child’s needs.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process, meeting the deadline for their child’s entry year.

The application route is through Devon County Council, including its online Reception application. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions: attending the nursery should not be understood as securing the next place.

Practical Information

Nursery enquiries go to admin@sidmouth-primary.devon.sch.uk. Families can also telephone 01395 514146 to arrange a school visit. Visits are optional and do not influence whether a school place is offered.

At Vicarage Road, the nursery’s 8:45 gate reopening is a useful detail for planning drop-off. It is an entrance arrangement, rather than a complete session timetable. Arrange a visit by appointment to explore the setting before making your decision.
