At a Glance

Learning beside older children gives this nursery its distinctive shape. From age two, children join the EYFS Unit at St Edmund's Catholic Primary School in Skelmersdale, sharing their learning with Reception children. This is nursery provision within a Catholic primary school, with the next stage already part of the children's everyday surroundings.

Early years provision received a Good judgement at the Ofsted inspection held on 23 and 24 April and 22 May 2024. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Two three-hour teaching sessions form the core day, with a lunch interval between them. Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learning here brings together early language, practical independence and preparation for reading. Development Matters and the Religious Education Curriculum guide the planning, with three topics each term linked to religious education. Catholic teaching therefore helps shape what children explore.

Teaching combines work with the whole class, smaller groups and activities planned around particular learning goals. Little Wandle and Welcomm are named interventions within early years. Nursery children begin exploring letter sounds through their own names, giving early reading a familiar starting point. In April and May 2024, adults demonstrated new vocabulary successfully and children put those words to use in their learning.

Outdoor experiences have included Forest School. In 2023, the EYFS children hunted for bugs, constructed pirate ships and made feeders for birds, while learning safety around the fire circle. These activities gave them practical ways to explore living things and build together. During the 2023–24 school year, early years children also cared for nine newly hatched chicks, connecting learning about new life with responsibility for animals.

Care and Support

Practical independence receives attention alongside learning. In April and May 2024, early years staff helped families develop children's self-care abilities. Staff also worked with families and outside specialists from the early years onwards to arrange help for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

The school SENDCo offers discussions at parents' evenings, drop-in sessions and reviews of individual education plans. This gives families several opportunities to talk about progress. A qualification matters here, though: in April and May 2024, some tasks restricted how younger children and children with SEND could show what they understood. Families should consider how their child's understanding can be demonstrated through different activities.

Thrive is the school's approach to emotional and social development, and every staff member has training in it. School support includes individual or small-group work in the Thrive room when additional help is needed. Lunch arrangements offer options with or without a meal, allowing families to choose the arrangement that suits their child.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application using Lancashire's online system, with a closing date of 15 January. A Supplementary Information Form must also be completed by 15 January.

Sharing the EYFS Unit means nursery children already learn alongside Reception children. That offers familiarity with the next stage's surroundings and older classmates; it is a learning arrangement, not an admission entitlement.

Practical Information

Session One runs from 8:45am to 11:45am; Session Two runs from 12:25pm to 3:25pm. Lunch occupies the interval from 11:45am to 12:25pm. Breakfast Club runs from 8am to 8:45am, while After School Club has options ending at 4:25pm or 6pm, both starting at 3:25pm.

The booking structure includes fee-paying sessions, a 15-hour morning pattern and a 30-hour pattern. Funding covers the teaching sessions within the funded arrangements; lunch and club periods carry separate charges. Contact the school office for current charges, nursery enquiries and financial-support information, or to arrange a guided school tour.

Changing sessions. Four working weeks' notice is required to change a child's sessions or leave the nursery. Without that notice, the full fees remain payable, so changes need planning ahead.
