At a Glance

In November 2024, a railway-station visit became classroom play at Brougham Street: children took the driver's role, checked tickets and revisited what they had learnt. Real experiences gave this Skipton nursery's curriculum its character, with woodland exploration and local outings providing material for conversation and imaginative play.

Brougham Street is a maintained nursery school. In November 2024, its school provision served children aged three and four, alongside linked care for children from birth to three. There were 41 children on the school roll at that time; that is an attendance figure, rather than a measure of available places.

At the inspection on 12 and 13 November 2024, inspectors judged education Outstanding. The same judgement applied to personal development, leadership and management, and behaviour and attitudes. These were separate judgements, rather than an overall nursery grade.

The Nursery Day

Learning starts with experiences children can return to and develop. In November 2024, a transport enquiry connected trips to railway and bus stations with a visit to a bicycle shop. Children explored how people travel, then used role play to revisit their discoveries. The classroom train play gave them a practical reason to take turns and remember details from an outing.

The enquiry also reached beyond the local area. Children used maps to locate Japan and explored its Shinkansen trains, alongside learning about trains in rural Australia. This linked something familiar with places further away, giving geographical learning a concrete starting point.

Woodland visits brought opportunities to explore nature. A mosque visit introduced religious practices, including handwashing and changing shoes, and children learnt about Eid. These experiences made cultural learning tangible.

Individual learning plans recorded achievements and identified each child's next steps. Staff drew on children's existing experiences and their knowledge of their key children to shape activities. The November 2024 findings described confident participation and a calm classroom, with learning adapted to children's needs.

Care and Support

Relationships with a key person were strong in November 2024, giving children a familiar adult connection within the setting. Adults modelled considerate behaviour and helped children put feelings into words. When difficulties arose, conversations helped children understand their choices and express what their actions meant. Taking turns, sharing and explaining emotions formed part of daily learning.

For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), support included signing alongside speech, a visual timetable and symbol cards. These gave children additional ways to understand activities and communicate. Children with SEND were making rapid, sustained progress at that time. Safeguarding arrangements were effective, and children felt safe.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Choosing this nursery and securing a school place are separate decisions.

The individual learning plans helped prepare children for their next stage by identifying achievements and further learning. That educational preparation should be understood separately from admission to Reception.

Practical Information

Full-time and part-time places were provided for three- and four-year-olds in November 2024. Wraparound care also covered periods before and after the main school day, extending care beyond the teaching day. These are useful distinctions for families comparing attendance patterns with their working hours.

The nursery school is on Brougham Street in Skipton, North Yorkshire, BD23 2ES.
