At a Glance

Little Wrens has a named place within Long Preston’s youngest teaching group: its teachers also work with Robins. This is nursery provision attached to Long Preston Endowed Voluntary Aided Primary School on School Lane, within the Ribblesdale Federation of Schools. The connection is through the teaching team, rather than simply a shared school name.

The federation describes its guiding values as friendship, respect, love and kindness. Those are its stated ambitions for children’s relationships and learning, giving parents a clear starting point for understanding the setting’s approach.

The Nursery Day

The curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage, or EYFS. Its planning includes early writing and reading, music, science and personal, social, health and economic education. In parent language, the scope brings together learning about the world, developing relationships and beginning to work with written language.

Vocabulary development has its own place in EYFS planning, alongside progression across learning. The federation aims to develop children’s curiosity and independent thinking. For families, that sets an expectation of learning with a purpose beyond completing an activity: building understanding that children can use as they move forward.

Care and Support

Teaching responsibilities connect Little Wrens with Robins, while the federation also has an Early Years Lead. A teaching assistant works in Robins. This gives the youngest teaching group a place within both the school’s classroom team and the federation’s early years structure.

For concerns about learning or development, the first contact is the class teacher. Parents can explain what they have noticed and share support already in place, including hearing or eyesight checks. Where the teacher cannot resolve the concern, the next step is discussion with the special educational needs coordinator, or SENDCo. Families can also contact that role directly at sendco@ribblesdalefed.n-yorks.sch.uk. The federation works with families and professionals from medical and other services to understand children’s support needs.

Safeguarding has a federation lead and deputy leads based at each school. Staff receive child protection training with annual updates, and concerns are recorded through CPOMS, the child protection monitoring system. These arrangements give parents a defined team to contact about a child’s welfare.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Little Wrens does not guarantee a Reception place at Long Preston. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the relevant deadline. The application route is through North Yorkshire County Council’s school admissions service, using its electronic application form.

The teaching connection between Little Wrens and Robins is separate from that application. Keep the two decisions distinct: choosing the nursery concerns your child’s early years experience; applying for Reception concerns the allocation of a school place.
