At a Glance

Market shopping, self-service snacks and outdoor play in rainy weather give Otley Street's nursery day a practical character. Children help prepare food, pour drinks and choose activities across indoor and outdoor spaces. Everyday tasks become opportunities to practise independence.

This local authority maintained nursery school is in Skipton, with a current age range of 2 to 5. Children have two classroom bases, used for group activities and collection, but can move between the learning spaces during sessions. A large garden and surrounding playground areas give outdoor learning room of its own.

The Nursery Day

Choice shapes the session. Children find their name card to register themselves, initially helped by a photograph that is later removed. They then choose an activity inside or outside, while adults support their play or organise focused work with individuals and small groups. A musical signal prompts tidying; midway through the session, groups gather for activities such as counting, dance, rhymes or stories.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning about feelings, relationships, movement and communication with early reading, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. Here, activities chosen by children sit alongside work led by adults. Outdoor classroom areas remain in use whatever the weather, with waterproof clothing and wellington boots provided for muddy or wet play.

In November 2024, early literacy, spoken language and physical development were strengths. Children practised word sounds using their mouths, developed larger movements through outdoor building and chalk drawing, and used tweezers to handle buttons indoors. These activities connect conversation and movement with the foundations for reading and pencil control.

Curriculum consistency. In November 2024, some teaching in numeracy and expressive arts did not give enough attention to essential skills. Experiences beyond nursery also needed greater depth and clearer links to learning. These were areas requiring further work, alongside the strengths in language and physical development.

Care and Support

Settling starts before the first full session. For September starters, preparations include a parents evening, summer session visits and a home visit from staff. Starts are staggered, a key adult is allocated, and children can initially attend for shorter periods according to their experience. That gives staff and families time to build familiarity around the child's needs.

Parents can speak briefly with staff around sessions or arrange a private discussion. Progress is checked at points through the year, and the Key Person answers questions. ParentMail carries messages and allows online permissions and payments. Children needing a more personalised start can have transition meetings involving parents and outside agencies.

Snack is part of learning too. Four children and two staff members shop at the local market twice each week for most snack supplies. Children help prepare food, wash their hands and serve themselves, choosing items such as cheese, peppers or fruit, with water or milk. Lunch runs between 11.30am and 12.30pm.

In November 2024, children with special educational needs and/or disabilities participated throughout nursery life, with staff identifying support needs promptly. Building Blocks for Language provides targeted speech and language support. Safeguarding arrangements were effective at that inspection.

Moving On to Reception

Children move from Otley Street to primary schools across Skipton and nearby villages. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place: families must make a separate application through the normal school admissions process. North Yorkshire's online school admissions route is provided for parents.

Preparation for that change is personal. Reception teachers visit children during nursery sessions, and staff pass on assessments and learning stories. Families keep the Learning Journey book. Stories about starting school and photographs with children heading to the same Reception class give families concrete ways to talk about the move. This transition support is separate from securing admission.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am; afternoons run from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. A full day runs from 8.30am to 3.30pm. Adding lunch extends the morning until 12.30pm or brings the afternoon start forward to 11.30am. Breakfast Club, Lunch Club and After School Club offer additional care that families can enquire about or book through the office.

For the universal 15-hour pattern, parents can request mornings, afternoons or two and a half days. Preferences are accommodated where possible; places are offered across five sessions weekly, with at least three full sessions requested for continuity. Three- and four-year-olds have a 15-hour funded entitlement over 38 weeks, with 30 hours over 38 weeks for eligible working families. Additional nursery sessions and lunch for funded children carry charges; contact the school for current charges.

Bring named clothing and suitable footwear, plus a sun hat and sun cream for sunny weather. Families needing an early afternoon collection because of other primary-school commitments should collect at 3.00pm and ring the doorbell. Visits can be arranged by contacting the nursery. Enquiries go to admin@otleystreet.n-yorks.sch.uk or 01756 793075.
