At a Glance

Story characters become maths problems, and action songs become lessons in rhythm: Khalsa’s nursery learning connects planned teaching with children’s interests. The provision belongs to the Sikh primary school on Wexham Road in Slough. There are 26 places in each morning and afternoon session, with children starting in September following their third birthday.

Faith gives this nursery its character. In July 2023, children were learning from Nursery onwards to consider their contribution to people and the planet. That makes personal responsibility part of the early learning experience, alongside developing knowledge and skills. The school’s Gurdarbar, its spiritual hall, provides a physical focus for its Sikh ethos.

The Nursery Day

Children’s interests have a practical role in the early years curriculum. In July 2023, teaching in Nursery and Reception used favourite fictional characters to frame mathematical problems. Marching to familiar action songs helped children explore musical rhythm. These are recognisable activities for a young child, with a specific learning purpose behind each one.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) here combines that responsiveness with a planned sequence of learning. In July 2023, nursery teachers had a precise understanding of the knowledge children needed to acquire. For parents, the useful distinction is that following a child’s interests does not mean leaving the learning direction to chance: stories and songs provide ways into deliberately chosen ideas.

Across the school, outdoor play includes equipment and games. This is a school-wide feature rather than a description of a separate nursery garden. It adds a physical, active dimension to the learning setting.

Care and Support

Each child in the EYFS has an allocated key person, giving families an identified adult within the care arrangements. Class Dojo is also used across the school to send parents positive updates, connecting home with children’s experiences.

Speech and language support has a nursery-specific route: children can access the SAL service. For children receiving SEND support, individual education plans are reviewed with parents and teachers each term. Children with complex learning needs use SCRUFFY targets, which allow learning goals to respond to their interests and developmental stage. The practical benefit is a support plan shaped around the child, with opportunities for families to contribute to its review.

Food reflects the school’s ethos too. Its own kitchen prepares vegetarian meals, while healthy packed lunches and snacks are encouraged. Water bottles support drinking during the day. These are school-wide arrangements; they should not be read as a promise that a meal is included in either nursery session.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their local authority’s Common Application Form and complete the school’s additional application. Sikh applicants also complete a Supplementary Information Form.

For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle has passed. Nursery attendance confers no priority under the 2027–28 admission arrangements, so familiarity with the school should be kept separate from the question of securing a place.

Practical Information

Morning and afternoon preferences are selected when applying. The session times are 08:15–11:15 and 12:05–15:05 respectively, making this a choice between two short sessions rather than evidence of a full-day booking option.

Collection timing. The separate nursery collection time is 15:15, which differs from the afternoon session’s 15:05 finish. That difference matters when planning the afternoon handover.

Nursery applications can be made once a child turns two. Nursery applicants do not need the Supplementary Information Form. For enquiries, contact the school office on 01753 823501 or office@kps-slough.com. Parents are welcome to arrange a school tour, providing an opportunity to discuss the setting’s ethos and daily arrangements.
