At a Glance

A home corner, a pretend campsite and a garden centre give this Catholic school nursery a day shaped around conversation and imaginative play. Nursery belongs to the school's Early Years team at Our Lady of Peace on Derwent Drive, Slough. Its class is St Nicholas, with a nursery class teacher within the team.

Faith is part of the learning from the start. The nursery curriculum connects religious stories with caring for other people and the world, making the Catholic character a practical consideration for families choosing the provision.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) here combines communication, physical development and early learning through play. The nursery curriculum map for 2025/26 uses questions about children's identities, their surroundings and future ambitions to organise learning. These give young children familiar starting points for talking and exploring.

Role play changes with the themes: a home corner gives way to camping, a vets setting and a garden centre. Stories include Dear Zoo and Goldilocks. Children can connect the books they hear with situations they act out, giving language a purpose beyond answering an adult's question.

Early phonics starts with listening. Environmental noises, instrumental sounds and rhyme lead towards voice sounds and the spoken work of blending and separating sounds. Maths includes counting through songs, comparing quantities and exploring shape. Balance and coordination sit alongside work on smaller and larger movements, so physical development is part of the learning plan too.

Outdoor learning has its own place in the early years provision, with several outdoor spaces used for learning. The early years approach also encourages children to write during play as well as with adult guidance. That links emerging writing to something a child wants to communicate.

Care and Support

Settling and learning daily routines appear at the beginning of the nursery's 2025/26 maths plan. Familiarity with the day is therefore part of the opening learning sequence, rather than a separate academic task.

For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school's early years policy requires staff to respond to developing difficulties and listen to parents' concerns. Support follows an assess, plan, do and review cycle. Parents are informed when additional educational provision is made, giving families a role in understanding their child's support.

The school SEND system uses Individual Provision Maps or Learning Plans, reviewed with parents at least once a term. Speech and language support includes a commissioned therapist who assesses children and sets targets. These are school support arrangements, with provision shaped around individual needs.

Physical access also matters. The accessibility plan identifies a ground-floor accessible toilet and wheelchair access except on the route upstairs. Families should consider that distinction when assessing the school's facilities.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority, following the normal application timetable. For Slough residents, the school's admissions page directs September Reception applications to Slough Borough Council's Citizen Portal.

The 2027/28 admission arrangements give no oversubscription priority for nursery attendance. The criteria instead concern care status, Catholic baptism and siblings, with distance used to resolve ties. Choosing nursery should therefore be a decision about this stage of your child's education, with the Reception application treated separately.

Practical Information

The nursery application form offers a morning request from 8:45am to 11:45am, an afternoon request from 12:15pm to 3:15pm, or a longer day from 8:45am to 2:45pm with a tax code or payment. The longer option ends earlier than the afternoon session, an important detail when planning collection. Contact the school for current charges.

Nursery enquiries go directly to the school office on 01628 661886. The application form also gives post@olopprimary.co.uk. Applications enter a waiting-list process, with the school contacting families in the term before the intended start to check whether they still want a place.

FAQs

The form lists 8:45am to 11:45am, 12:15pm to 3:15pm, and 8:45am to 2:45pm with a tax code or payment.

No. The 2027/28 arrangements do not include nursery attendance as a priority criterion, and attendance does not guarantee a place. A separate application is required through your home local authority.

The 2025/26 plan includes role play, stories, listening activities, counting, shape exploration and physical development. Themes connect learning with children's lives and surroundings.

Parents' concerns are considered during assessment. Individual Provision Maps or Learning Plans are reviewed with parents at least termly.

Contact the school office on 01628 661886 or use post@olopprimary.co.uk. Nursery enquiries are handled directly by the school.
