Nursery at Western House Academy

Conversation, stories and creative play give Western House Academy’s nursery its clearest character. Children can join in the term following their third birthday, placing this provision at the beginning of their school experience in Cippenham. The nursery belongs to Western House Academy on Richards Way, within The Park Federation Academy Trust.
For parents, the useful distinction is between becoming familiar with a school and securing a future place there. Nursery attendance offers that first school experience; Reception requires another application.
Speaking and listening are a clear focus. At the November 2022 inspection, nursery children received careful support with these skills, while children across early years enjoyed rhymes and stories and developed their understanding of letters and sounds. This gives parents a concrete picture of the learning emphasis: hearing language, joining conversations and beginning to connect spoken sounds with print.
Creative work adds a different kind of expression. Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the school’s approach to art gives children opportunities to explore texture, colour and materials, explain what they have made, and use props in story-based role play. In everyday terms, that means learning through making, talking and pretending, rather than treating art simply as a finished picture to take home.
Kapow is the school’s art planning and teaching tool. Early-years activities combine children’s own choices with adults demonstrating techniques and helping them take ideas further. Observations of their participation and developing skills inform assessment. The emphasis gives children room to experiment while adults help them extend what they can do.
Support sits within a wider school team. A SEND coordinator manages provision for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, with a dedicated contact at whasend@theparkfederation.org. The school also has speech and language support from a higher level teaching assistant and an independent therapist, alongside key workers specialising in English as an additional language. These are useful routes for families wanting to discuss communication or additional needs.
Family support extends beyond learning. The Child and Family Support Worker helps with parenting, confidence, life skills and healthy eating, and works with outside agencies. Parents can leave a message through the school office to make contact.
Across the school, Zones of Regulation helps children recognise and discuss emotions. Quiet spaces and nurture provision offer calmer alternatives to busy breaks, while sensory circuits use short sequences of movement to help children prepare for learning. These are school-wide arrangements, rather than a description of every nursery child’s routine.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority and meet the deadline for the relevant intake.
For the September 2026 intake, Slough residents applied through the Slough Citizen Portal; residents elsewhere used their own borough’s admissions portal. That application cycle is now closed. Once the local authority allocates a place, the admissions team contacts the family for further details and transition information.
Nursery applications go directly to the school office, and Western House Academy allocates the places. Nursery tours can be booked, giving families a way to explore the setting before applying.
