Pom-poms, pincers and number matching give Abbey’s nursery learning a concrete starting point. This is the nursery provision within Abbey Infant School on Maurice Road in Smethwick, with three- and four-year-olds learning both alongside other children and independently.
Ofsted’s March 2023 inspection described indoor and outdoor learning for this age group, supported by focused adult teaching. The useful picture for parents is of early learning made tangible: children handle objects, listen, count and practise using words to explain what they are doing.
A written numeral becomes a practical challenge: how many pom-poms belong with it? During the March 2023 inspection, children used pincers to gather the matching amount, with adult guidance on checking answers and mathematical language. This links symbols to quantities. Counting to ten and representing numbers with fingers extended that practice, while finding numerals in their surroundings connected it to everyday life.
Stories sit alongside songs, rhymes and sound exploration. Children listened and participated, with sounds around them providing another starting point for early reading. Indoor and outdoor learning gave them different contexts in which to practise, while activities included both working together and doing things independently.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning, development and care together. Abbey also uses Jigsaw for personal development, including recognising feelings and building social skills. Its themes include Celebrating Difference and Healthy Me, giving conversations about relationships and wellbeing a planned place alongside early literacy and mathematics.
Support for additional needs involves families. Abbey’s SENCO works within a school approach that includes targeted interventions and collaboration with parents and carers. Families’ knowledge of their child contributes to planning support, making this a useful point of contact for discussing individual needs.
The infant site also has The Rainbow Room, a space where children can speak with a trusted adult. Early Years safeguarding teaching includes NSPCC PANTASAURUS materials. This gives personal safety a named teaching resource, alongside the wider provision for children to share worries with staff.
Abbey’s school meals page describes Educaterers catering, a three-week menu rotation and a packed lunch alternative. It also directs families needing medical dietary arrangements to the school office. Confirm nursery lunch options and medical dietary arrangements with the infant office before planning food for the day. Children below five are automatically registered for free milk.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as two separate decisions.
