Stories, friendships and growing independence give Annie Lennard’s nursery its character. Children can start from age 3, joining the school’s own early years provision at The Oval in Smethwick. The emphasis is on getting ready for school through personal development as well as learning: becoming more confident, managing routines and building relationships with other children.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 26 and 27 November 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Books are an important part of the early years experience. In November 2024, children encountered carefully chosen stories from the beginning of their time in early years, and effective phonics teaching supported their first steps towards reading. For parents, this gives the nursery day a clear emphasis on familiarity with books and the sounds that support reading.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) experience also includes learning how to be with other people. Children practise classroom routines, gain independence and learn how to make friends. These everyday skills matter alongside reading: a child learning to join in and manage familiar expectations is also preparing for school life.
Emotional learning starts here too. Children learn about feelings and emotions, giving them a basis for understanding their own responses. The emphasis extends beyond early reading to how children relate to others and understand themselves.
Settling is supported by clear expectations from the start of nursery. In November 2024, children settled promptly, became familiar with routines and developed the skills needed for friendship. That is useful reassurance for families approaching a first experience of education away from home.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school’s policy includes assessing individual needs and setting personal educational targets. It also gives parents a voice in decisions about provision. An early years and Key Stage 1 special educational needs coordinator provides a named role within the support structure, so families have a clear team function to approach.
Safeguarding procedures require concerns to reach the designated safeguarding team. Staff use the MY CONCERN system to record concerns, while safeguarding and child protection policies can be requested. This provides a defined route for raising a child’s welfare needs.
Attending Annie Lennard’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Sandwell local authority manages school admissions, and the school directs families to its school admissions service.
Keep that application separate from the nursery waiting list. Joining the nursery and applying for a school place are distinct steps; familiarity with the school should not be treated as an allocation promise.
Nursery enquiries go directly to the school on 0121 429 4284. To join the waiting list, provide your child’s date of birth and name, your address and a telephone number. For a September nursery start, the application form is sent during the preceding term.
Families are invited to arrange a nursery visit by getting in touch. A separate virtual tour shows the wider school’s playgrounds, classrooms and sensory room, offering a useful introduction to the school site.
