Play that turns observation into conversation gives Uplands Manor’s early years its character. In May 2023, children watched chicks develop, made models of them and explained their creations. These were practical opportunities to connect what children noticed with what they could make and say.
The nursery belongs to Uplands Manor Primary School and Nursery on Addenbrooke Road in Smethwick. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 16 and 17 May 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the nursery’s curriculum context. The May 2023 early years examples give parents a concrete picture of learning through activity: children practised cooperating, explored living things and used model-making to develop their explanations. Learning involved doing and talking together.
Chick models brought several ideas into one activity. Children considered body shapes, counted the legs and eyes their creations needed, and added feathers. They could then explain the making process step by step. Vocabulary about sequence and shape carried teaching into their play, giving children a reason to use new language rather than simply repeat it.
Outdoor learning was another feature of early years in May 2023. Children enjoyed activities outside, and leaders had invested in the outdoor learning space. This gave play a physical setting beyond the classroom.
Learning resources. The same inspection identified materials whose suitability and organisation sometimes limited learning through play. Leaders were asked to improve both. For families, the balance matters: purposeful activities and an outdoor space sat alongside a specific concern about the resources supporting children’s exploration.
A nursery class teacher sits within the early years team, with an assistant headteacher leading EYFS. The wider school has an inclusion and pastoral lead, a SENDCo and an assistant SENDCo. These roles give families identifiable points of contact for discussing learning and support needs.
Speech and language support is a concrete part of the school’s provision. Enhanced input from speech and language therapists supports children’s communication, and an NHS speech and language therapist works in school on Tuesdays. For a family concerned about understanding or speech, that is a useful connection within the school.
Nursery Stay & Play events took place on 4 September 2026, with separate morning and afternoon slots. These offered an occasion for nursery play at the start of the school year.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Sandwell Local Authority, which allocates Reception places. Choosing this nursery therefore needs to be a decision about the nursery experience itself, alongside a separate application for the next stage.
For children starting Reception in September 2026, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That deadline belongs to the past intake. The application route is Sandwell’s online Reception admissions service; the nursery application is a separate process.
The school office handles enquiries about places and can be contacted on 0121 558 1602. Nursery applications include a separate application route for 30-hour funding. This gives families a specific funding application to consider alongside their nursery application.
School closures include the autumn half term from 26 to 30 October 2026 and a staff training day on 2 November 2026. These dates matter when organising family childcare around the school calendar.
