Colour mixing, storytelling and conversations about nature give this nursery its character. South Molton Community Primary School Nursery puts language at the centre of learning, with opportunities to ask questions, explain ideas and think together with adults. The nursery aims to connect that work with children's curiosity about the outdoors. Words and exploration belong together here.
The provision is part of South Molton Community Primary School on North Road in South Molton. We hold no published inspection grade for it.
Learning centres on communication: listening, developing vocabulary and using stories to prompt discussion. Alongside this, children have opportunities to collaborate, practise independence and build relationships. For parents, the distinctive feature is the connection between practical play and talk, rather than language being confined to a separate activity.
In the week beginning 3rd March 2025, colour provided the learning theme. Children discussed shades and mixed colours, matched toy cars with parking spaces marked by colour and number, and explored scented, coloured play dough. Water activities combined sorting by colour with investigations into what would sink or float. These examples show how one theme can bring conversation, early maths and experimentation together.
Stories included The Blue Balloon and The Day the Crayons Quit. Maths activities explored words for position and movement, with children creating routes through miniature scenes using shapes. Resources were initially available for free exploration before children began using them with a particular purpose. Sound activities covered rhyme, syllables and alliteration, alongside hearing initial sounds and practising how spoken words can be split and blended.
Nature is the other strand of the nursery's approach. The wider school grounds include a woodland learning area with dens, shelters and a mud kitchen, plus an outdoor classroom made from a shipping container. These are features of the school environment, alongside the nursery's own emphasis on outdoor exploration.
The nursery aims to help children communicate their ideas and develop the social skills needed to listen and work alongside others. Its colour learning summary also suggested activities for families, including naming colours in everyday routines, sorting objects and painting. That gives parents concrete ways to continue the conversation at home.
SEND support is a responsibility across the school. Parents can arrange a discussion with the Special Educational Needs Coordinator. For children with severe sensory, physical or mobility difficulties, the school advises making contact well before admission so that consultations can take place. Early discussion gives families an opportunity to explain their child's needs before starting.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate formal application through Devon County Council, rather than applying directly to the school. The council is the admissions authority and makes admission decisions. Keep the nursery application and the later Reception application as separate tasks.
Preparation also has a home dimension: the nursery encourages families to practise confidence and independence before starting school. That preparation is distinct from securing a place.
