Nursery at South Petherton Church of England Infants and Pre School

A separate village site, but a shared early years team: South Petherton’s pre-school combines its own base with regular contact with the infant school. It admits children from two years old and operates at The Recreation Ground on Lightgate Lane. This is the nursery provision of South Petherton Church of England Infants and Pre School, rather than a separate school.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 12 and 13 November 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. In November 2024, even the youngest pre-school children maintained their attention during learning.
Practical exploration shapes the pre-school’s approach. Children learn by trying things themselves, with opportunities intended to develop creativity and thoughtful problem-solving. The nursery and school teams plan early years learning together, giving the curriculum a connection across the two sites rather than treating pre-school as an isolated stage.
Rhymes and singing form part of early years learning. Children also take responsibility for small classroom tasks, making independence something to practise during the day. These are useful everyday experiences: joining in with songs and contributing to classroom life sit alongside the nursery’s emphasis on learning through experience.
In November 2024, learning in early years followed a considered sequence, helping children connect new content with earlier learning. The pre-school was also included in the school’s teaching checks. Its separate location did not put it outside that oversight.
Settling begins with opportunities for a parent and child to play together at the nursery. Short introductory sessions follow when children start, allowing the change to be approached in smaller steps rather than as one abrupt handover.
The staffing structure includes a pre-school manager, early years practitioners and a practitioner with responsibility for special educational needs. In November 2024, collaboration between the pre-school and infant school helped identify additional needs promptly, so children could receive suitable adjustments and support. For a family whose child needs extra help, that cooperation is a meaningful part of the provision.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through Somerset County Council and meet the normal Reception application deadline. Treat the nursery choice and the school application as two decisions.
Preparation for the move is a separate matter. A transition programme develops across the academic year for children due to start at South Petherton Infants. Visits to the school, outings and school events introduce nursery children to the wider staff team, while school teachers also visit the pre-school. Those contacts build familiarity; they do not secure admission.
To register interest, complete the Registration of Interest form and return it to the pre-school. Children join a waiting list, with families contacted closer to their preferred starting date. Registration therefore begins a process rather than confirming an immediate start.
