Nursery at Monkton Infants' School

Transport models, homemade drums and seed planting give Monkton’s nursery its hands-on character. Provision includes two-year-olds and older nursery children, with the nursery occupying separate premises on Bainbridge Avenue in South Shields. It belongs to Monkton Infants' School, but families need to distinguish the nursery address from the infant school’s St Simon Street site.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 8 and 9 October 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Making things gives children concrete reasons to plan, talk and practise using tools. In a past nursery project, two-year-olds built models of favourite vehicles from reused materials and practised cutting. Children attending the 30-hour provision also made instruments: drums and tambourines joined homemade guitars. These examples connect creative play with the physical work of handling and shaping materials.
Another transport project involved pictures of trains made from shapes. Two-year-olds grouped vehicles according to whether they travelled by sea, air or land, then drew plans to guide their model making. The activity moved beyond naming vehicles: children had opportunities to sort ideas and turn a drawing into an object. Older nursery children explored what might be beneath the ground and in a garden, planted seeds and created model mini-beasts.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) combines this practical learning with early language, number work and growing independence. In October 2024, early years classrooms had plentiful resources, and the curriculum followed a carefully ordered sequence. Children could practise number skills for themselves, while adults used questions to extend their thinking. Stories, rhymes and singing began in the two-year-old provision, giving even the youngest children a starting point for learning through language.
Settling has a clear place in the early years approach. In October 2024, established induction arrangements helped children become comfortable quickly. Adults also supported children in handling their feelings and doing more for themselves, making emotional development part of learning rather than a separate concern.
Additional needs. The same inspection identified a school-wide concern about occasional delays in recognising special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), alongside support targets that were sometimes too imprecise. Some pupils consequently received less timely or less closely matched help than they needed. For families considering nursery, the relevant issue is how promptly a child’s needs are recognised and translated into specific support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Choosing this nursery should therefore be a decision about the child’s nursery experience, with the later school application treated separately.
