Nursery at St Mary's Catholic Primary School, Southam

Catholic values give this nursery its setting and purpose. St Mary's aims to help children enjoy learning alongside their spiritual development, with kindness and mutual respect among its values. The nursery belongs to St Mary's Catholic Primary School on Daventry Road in Southam and accepts children aged three as they become eligible for funded hours.
Movement has a specific place in nursery learning. Physical education includes an introduction to PE, dance, gymnastics and ball skills. These give children different ways to practise using their bodies, rather than making physical development solely about games.
Relationships and emotional development sit alongside that physical activity within early years learning. The school uses Ten:Ten's Life to the full programme for relationships, health and sex education, adapting teaching to children's age and maturity. Its early years content includes learning about feelings, friendships and keeping safe. For parents, this means feelings, friendships and safety have a place in planned early years teaching. The school describes this learning as a responsibility shared with families.
An Early Years Class Teacher and an Early Years Practitioner form part of the staffing structure. The wider school also has a SENDCo and an Early Help and Pastoral Support role. Parents with SEND enquiries can contact senco@mso.magnificat.org.uk directly, giving them a specific route for discussing additional needs.
Lunch brings children into the school hall, where eating is organised by key stage. Warwickshire Educaterers supplies the school meals, which are prepared each day. Choices include a jacket potato with fillings, a cold deli bag and hot dishes, including a vegetarian option. That gives families alternatives within the same meal service.
Meals need advance booking through ParentPay. The school is nut-free; families should request the caterer's form through the office for a medically diagnosed allergy, intolerance or religious dietary restriction. Deal with that paperwork before relying on a particular meal choice.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no admissions priority. Families must make a separate application, with nursery children assessed against the same oversubscription criteria as other applicants. Familiarity with the school does not change that process.
Apply through the school admissions service of the local authority where you live, naming St Mary's as a preference. A Supplementary Information Form must also go directly to the school. For the September 2026 intake, both were due by 15 January 2026, a deadline that has passed. Keep the nursery application and the Reception application as two separate tasks.
New nursery cohorts join each term when three-year-olds qualify for universal 15-hour or extended 30-hour funding. Paid sessions may allow an earlier start between a child's third birthday and funding beginning. Contact the school for current charges. Nursery applications go directly to the school, and tours can be arranged.
Nursery gate access begins at 8:30am. The early years entrance is through the blue gate beside the gazebo, reached by turning right after the main gates and passing the hall. Tell the office or morning duty staff in advance if someone outside the approved collection list will collect your child.
