On the West Lancashire coastal plain, where extensive sand dunes fringe the Irish Sea, Southport grew from a single bathing house in 1792 into one of England's most distinctive Victorian seaside resorts. Lord Street, a wide tree-lined boulevard developed in the nineteenth century, defines the town's commercial core, while Southport Pier, the second-longest seaside pleasure pier in the British Isles, anchors the seafront. Ainsdale extends the residential belt toward the dunes, while Blowick and Meols Cop form the more settled inland quarters of the town. The 2021 census recorded around 94,000 residents.
Birkdale, to the south, is widely regarded as one of Southport's most school-competitive neighbourhoods, with families competing for state primary places. Northern Rail services run to Liverpool Lime Street in around forty minutes.
