Nursery at Southwold Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Books, conversation and growing vocabulary give Southwold’s early years provision its character. Children begin exploring books and learning to read from the start, while language development receives sustained attention. For parents, the emphasis is on the building blocks of learning: becoming interested in books and developing the words to express ideas.

The nursery belongs to Southwold Primary School on Cumberland Road. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 1 and 2 October 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school.

The Nursery Day

Language and communication are a clear focus of the early years curriculum. In October 2024, children showed curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, with opportunities to broaden their vocabulary across different areas. The practical value is wider than learning individual words: language helps children explain their thinking and engage with new ideas.

Books also have a place from the beginning. Children develop positive reading habits as they explore books and start learning to read. These are useful foundations for families who want early education to build an interest in reading alongside communication. The early years foundation stage here gives language development a clear place within children’s learning.

Care and Support

Arbor connects families with the nursery. Parents can receive messages through its phone app or use the browser portal, giving them two ways to keep up with communication. App users need notifications switched on to receive alerts about new messages.

For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school considers needs individually. The class teacher liaises with the SEND coordinator, whose responsibilities include organising support and communicating with parents. This gives families a clear starting point for discussing their child’s needs.

Support can include individual work or small groups, with learning spaces and activities adjusted to children’s needs. Personalised Support Plans are reviewed at least half-termly, creating regular opportunities to reconsider support. Southwold also has an accessible toilet and changing facilities. These are concrete features for families considering physical access and personal care.

Moving On to Reception

Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Suffolk County Council coordinates the normal primary admissions round, with applications made through its primary school application service.

Separate application. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two decisions. Nursery attendance should not be treated as confirmation of a future school place.

Practical Information

The nursery’s school address is Cumberland Road, Southwold, Suffolk, IP18 6JP. For nursery enquiries, contact the school on 01502 723137.

Once enrolled, families use Arbor for routine messages. The browser portal works on a computer or tablet, while the app is used on a phone. Access uses the parent’s email address held by the school, so keeping that address up to date helps families stay connected.

FAQs

Language, communication and vocabulary development are clear priorities. Children also explore books and begin learning to read from the outset.

Start with the class teacher, who liaises with the SEND coordinator about support. Children’s needs are considered individually.
