Play, a teacher-led morning and participation in school life give Beech Hyde’s nursery its character. Children join assemblies, take part in PE and attend events in the main school building. Their world extends beyond the nursery room, with opportunities to become familiar with the wider school before their next step.
At Wheathampstead’s Beech Hyde Primary School and Nursery, the nursery team includes a qualified teacher alongside early years practitioners. The nursery describes its room as spacious and bright, and places children’s interests and play at the centre of learning. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the September 2022 inspection; this is an early years judgement within the school inspection.
The morning runs from 8.30am to 11.30am. A qualified nursery teacher teaches the early years curriculum during that session, combining an educational focus with the nursery’s emphasis on play led by children’s interests. For families, the defining arrangement is a morning of nursery education with a teacher, rather than a full day within this provision.
EYFS means Early Years Foundation Stage, the curriculum framework used here for young children’s learning. At Beech Hyde, that includes learning how to share and wait for a turn, so social development forms part of the educational day. These are practical skills children use when playing and learning with others.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds is the school’s named approach to phonics and early reading in EYFS. It gives the early years curriculum a specific framework for developing reading skills. Alongside classroom learning, nursery children use the main building for assemblies and PE. Those activities bring movement and participation in school events into their nursery experience.
Staffing combines teaching and support roles: the nursery has its own class teacher and teaching assistant, while the wider staff team includes an early years specialist. Communication with families is also part of the nursery teacher’s work, with calls and emails to parents among the afternoon tasks. This gives families a direct connection with the person planning and teaching the nursery curriculum.
In September 2022, inspectors found that early years staff received clear guidance on adapting learning for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, helping them participate alongside their peers. Families can contact the SENCO at senco@beechhyde.aetrust.uk to discuss provision.
The school’s safeguarding team includes the early years specialist among its deputy leads. Concerns about a child can be sent to safe@beechhyde.aetrust.uk, giving parents a specific contact route for welfare concerns.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Hertfordshire County Council, which allocates the places. For the 2026 admissions cycle, the application deadline was 15 January 2026; that date has passed.
Familiarity and admission are separate matters. Joining assemblies, PE and school events gives nursery children experience of the main building and wider school routines. That practical connection can help make the next stage feel more familiar, but it does not secure admission.
Morning provision. Nursery operates in the mornings only, from 8.30am to 11.30am. The 15-hour provision can be accessed through the universal 15-hour entitlement. Families needing full-day childcare can access Early Bird Pre-school on the same site, so a longer day involves another provision.
Nursery applications go directly to the school, rather than through the Reception allocation route. Applications are accepted throughout the year and can be submitted by email or delivered to the school office. To arrange a visit, telephone 01582 832661 or email admin@beechhyde.aetrust.uk.
