A secure outdoor area and indoor space reserved for nursery children give Burton Manor’s youngest learners a setting of their own within the primary school. The nursery combines government-funded places with extra sessions that can extend attendance to a full-time pattern. That makes the choice about both the learning environment and how much of the day a child spends there.
Teaching is led by a teacher, with a full-time nursery nurse supporting the provision. Ducklings sits alongside Nursery as a separately named part of the school’s early years provision. Both have a nursery nurse leader, giving families distinct team roles for the two groups.
Morning and afternoon sessions sit either side of a separate lunch period. Children have their own indoor environment and a secure area outdoors, so their learning space includes both settings rather than being confined to a classroom.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) planning includes Development Matters and topics named Marvellous Me, Wonderful World and Creatures Great and Small. These give the learning a recognisable focus on children themselves and the world around them.
At the October 2024 inspection, early years learning was planned around children’s existing abilities, with activities including transferring objects with pincers and making autumn-tree pictures through dot painting. These are concrete examples of small-hand movements being practised through play and art. Adults introduced vocabulary and explained ideas clearly, while children became accustomed to cooperating in activities and play.
There was also a specific concern: children whose communication was at an early stage needed more chances to answer questions and join discussions. Leaders were acting to address this. Participation in conversation matters alongside hearing new words. Across the school, the improvement action also concerned the foundations of writing, which needed firmer teaching to develop fluency; that was a school-wide concern rather than a separate nursery judgement.
Relationships between adults and children in early years were warm in October 2024. Alongside the nursery teaching team, the school has a special educational needs coordinator who works with staff on progress and further interventions, and contacts external agencies for specialist advice. This provides a school-level route for coordinating additional support.
Meals for Nursery and Ducklings are supplied through CMC catering. Families pay ahead through ParentPay; contact the school for current meal charges. Foundation Stage children also receive a daily free piece of fruit through the National School Fruit Scheme, adding a defined food provision alongside the meal arrangements.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal Reception admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat choosing nursery sessions and applying for a school place as two separate decisions.
The morning runs from 8:40 to 11:40, lunch from 11:40 to 12:25, and the afternoon from 12:25 to 15:25. Nursery offers a 15-hour government-funded place, with additional sessions allowing full-time attendance. Lunch has its own slot between the teaching sessions, so it belongs in the practical planning of a longer day.
