Songs, traditional tales and children's own interests shape learning in the Day and Night Monkeys, Flash Ley Primary School's nursery class. Part of the school's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), it admits children in the term following their third birthday. The emphasis is on exploring, talking and becoming confident enough to try things independently.
Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 7 and 8 June 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. Flash Ley Voyage, which provides pre-school and wraparound childcare on the same site, has separate registration and inspection. Families should distinguish the two provisions.
Play has a planned purpose here. The EYFS combines early learning with children's personal, social and physical development; Flash Ley's Milestones curriculum breaks learning into steps, with plans made each half term. Children's interests and contributions from home help shape those plans. This gives adults a sequence to work towards while leaving room for what captures a child's attention.
Little Wandle Foundations for Phonics introduces the listening skills needed for later reading. Songs, stories and rhyme help children hear differences between sounds, while voices, instruments and body sounds give them ways to experiment with rhythm. Traditional tales and nursery rhymes form a planned sequence too. Early literacy starts with listening and language.
Mathematics develops through practical experiences involving number, patterns and shape. Indoor and outdoor learning spaces are arranged to encourage independent exploration, with activities responding to children's interests. Stay and play sessions, educational outings and class productions add experiences beyond everyday play. These are opportunities to explore and participate, rather than a timetable of formal subjects.
In June 2023, early years staff understood individual children's needs exceptionally well and helped them feel settled and ready to learn. Nursery routines introduced sharing resources and waiting for a turn, giving children clear expectations for playing alongside others. Summer-term transition activities allow children to become familiar with their next adults, peers and surroundings before the holidays.
Parents receive a weekly topic sheet through the yellow home learning book, alongside letters and messages. Marvellous Me carries further communication, and nursery@flashley.staffs.sch.uk provides a direct route for learning questions or worries. Families can also share learning from home through the book or class email, so communication works both ways.
Support includes Speak out for nursery speech and language, plus Play-doh therapy for communication and personal, emotional and social development. In June 2023, extra needs were identified promptly and specialist advice sought when needed. However, individual education plans lacked sufficient detail about the actions adults should take to support learning and emotions. For a child needing additional help, the practical detail of their support plan matters.
CMC Foods supplies nursery meals, which are charged separately and can be paid for in advance or on the day. Contact the school for current meal charges.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through the local authority at the appropriate time. Treat that application as a distinct step, even if your child is already familiar with Flash Ley.
The summer transition programme gives children time to get to know their new teachers, other children and learning environment. That familiarity can address worries before the summer break; it does not secure admission.
To enquire or arrange an Early Years tour, telephone the school office on 01785 337340. General enquiries can also go to office3@flashley.staffs.sch.uk. A tour offers a chance to see the learning spaces that will form part of your child's day.
For September nursery entry, completed application forms go to the school office by 31 March. This nursery application is separate from the later local-authority application for Reception.
