At a Glance

Children's interests help shape the learning at St Mary's nursery: staff combine activities children choose with teaching planned to extend their thinking. This is nursery provision within St Mary's Catholic Primary School in Brewood, with Nursery included in Class 1 alongside the school's EYFS provision. The school has a Catholic character and welcomes families with any faith or none.

Early years received a Strong standard judgement in the Ofsted report dated 12 May 2026. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery. Its strengths include children's growing independence, close relationships with adults and learning that builds progressively.

The Nursery Day

Learning moves between indoor provision and outdoor space, with adults using both to develop children's interests. Some activities start with a child's own choice; others are planned by the nursery teacher to encourage problem solving and discussion. Staff draw on what children already know, including information from parents, so the next activity can extend an existing interest rather than start from scratch.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together seven areas of development. In everyday terms, children practise listening and talking, learn to cooperate, explore numbers and begin reading and writing. They also investigate the world around them, develop movement and tool control, and express ideas creatively. Practical number activities build understanding of mathematical language. Running and jumping develop larger movements, while using pens demands finer control. Music, imaginative play and art give children other ways to communicate feelings and ideas.

Communication and early reading receive close attention. Activities develop vocabulary and are adjusted around children's next learning steps. In May 2026, children across early years were making excellent progress, including those facing disadvantage and those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). The same inspection set a school-wide improvement priority around using learning checks consistently to catch errors promptly; this was not identified as a nursery-specific weakness.

Care and Support

Calm surroundings and predictable routines support children's wellbeing. In May 2026, relationships with staff helped children feel secure and ready to take part, while families were involved and kept informed. That connection between adults and children matters alongside the learning itself: confidence and independence were developing quickly across early years.

Parents' knowledge contributes to nursery planning. Staff use children's earlier experiences and interests to decide how to extend learning, giving families a practical role in shaping what happens next. Children with SEND made excellent progress across early years in May 2026, evidence that additional needs were being supported within the learning programme.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Staffordshire County Council, which allocates the places. Keep that application separate from the decision to join nursery.

Preparation for starting Reception includes several half-day visits for new entrants. Parents also have a meeting with the teaching team and receive an admission pack. These arrangements help children become familiar with their next classroom and give families an opportunity to discuss the change. They do not secure admission.
