Nursery at St Patrick's Catholic Primary School

We are family sets the tone for the nursery's first half term: play and activities centred on getting to know one another and developing a sense of self. Relationships come first. This is the school's own nursery at St Patrick's Catholic Primary School on Marston Road in Stafford, within a Catholic school.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 4 and 5 October 2022. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Morning and afternoon sessions shape the nursery day. The first autumn learning theme, We are family, gives children opportunities to explore who they are while becoming familiar with their peers. The nursery aims to use these play experiences to help children develop positive relationships, making the social side of starting nursery part of the learning itself.
Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), early learning includes counting and phonics. In October 2022, children had opportunities to explore numbers and rehearse counting, building knowledge for later mathematics. They also persevered with activities and maintained their concentration. These are useful foundations for tackling unfamiliar tasks.
Phonics teaching began at the start of early years, with reading books matched to children's ability so they could practise the sounds they were learning. Alongside this, the school's Life to the Full programme by Ten Ten Resources has an EYFS strand covering relationships, health and emotions through a Catholic perspective. Good Feelings, Bad Feelings and People Who Help Us are named sessions, connecting emotional understanding with learning about support and safety.
A fruit or vegetable choice is available to EYFS children at morning break. For additional learning needs, the starting point is the class teacher, followed by the special educational needs coordinator (SENCo) when further discussion is needed. Meetings can be arranged through the office.
Support can include work with a small group or individual help with speech and language or phonics. Pupil Passports record targets, and the school uses an Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle to identify needs, plan support and evaluate its effect. This gives parents a framework for discussing what their child needs and how support is working.
Curriculum support. In October 2022, school-wide concerns included inconsistent adaptation for SEND, tasks that sometimes failed to serve curriculum aims, and insufficiently detailed checks on teaching. These were not findings specifically about nursery practice, but families considering additional support should discuss how learning will be adapted for their child.
Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives admission priority. Families must make a separate application, and children are assessed against the same criteria whether or not they attend the nursery.
