A separate, purpose-built nursery building gives Stanwell Fields’ youngest learners space of their own. The indoor facilities and enclosed outdoor areas sit apart from the infant building, while access to other outdoor learning spaces keeps the nursery connected to the wider school. This is school-based provision with a distinct physical base.
Caterpillars is the nursery class. A qualified teacher leads learning, supported by a nursery nurse and a learning support assistant, with oversight from the Early Years Phase Leader. The nursery aims to develop independence through play and active learning. Christian values shape that aim, alongside respect for children’s own cultures and those of others.
Indoor and outdoor learning follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In parent terms, that brings together children’s communication, physical development, relationships, early literacy and mathematics, understanding of the world, and creative expression. Space on both sides of the nursery doors supports that breadth: learning has room to extend beyond the classroom.
Practical activities give early years children a way to understand mathematical ideas, alongside learning the words that explain them. Stories and nursery rhymes support communication too. In June 2025, Ofsted linked children’s positive start to the organised curriculum, highlighting its emphasis on language development. These activities connect understanding with things children can do and discuss.
The nursery also aims to encourage creativity and independent choices. Its approach links curiosity with learning through play.
Teaching and care involve a teacher, nursery nurse and learning support assistant. The Early Years Phase Leader oversees nursery provision, connecting the team to the school’s wider early years structure.
For children with additional needs, the school aims to make learning accessible and reduce barriers to participation. Its SENDCO role sits within the inclusion leadership team. Parents with a concern about their child should start with the class teacher; unresolved concerns can progress to senior staff. That gives families a direct starting point for discussion.
Food is prepared in the school kitchen using the Chefs in Schools ethos. The school describes its meals as fresh, healthy and tasty. A free breakfast is offered to all children in the infant hall through the National School Breakfast Programme, providing a practical option before nursery begins.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through their home local authority, following the normal application timetable. Treat the nursery choice and the school application as separate decisions.
Shared outdoor learning space provides a useful connection with Reception. Nursery children can become familiar with an environment used by the older early years children, and the nursery aims for this to ease the move into school. That familiarity is a transition benefit, not a promise of admission.
Two 15-hour patterns divide the week. One combines Monday and Tuesday, 8.45am to 3pm, with Wednesday morning, 8.45am to 11.45am. The other begins on Wednesday afternoon, noon to 3pm, followed by Thursday and Friday, 8.45am to 3pm. Families therefore choose a grouped pattern rather than simply selecting mornings throughout the week.
A 30-hour option runs Monday to Friday, 8.45am to 3pm, for eligible children with a valid code and subject to spaces. Nursery applications use a nursery application form. General enquiries go to the school office at office@stanwellfields.surrey.sch.uk or 01784 258082.
