At a Glance

Lunch in a yurt, blackberry picking and visits to farm animals give Copthill’s youngest children a countryside childhood alongside their early learning. Nursery and Pre-School cater for ages 2–4 within Copthill Independent Day School & Nursery, on Barnack Road in Uffington, near Stamford. The outdoor commitment is concrete: younger nursery children have half a day outside each week; pre-school children have a whole day, including lunch in the Copthill yurt.

In January 2025, the provision comprised two nursery classes, grouping children aged 2–3 and 3–4. That age-based structure distinguishes the younger nursery stage from the year before Reception.

The Nursery Day

Play supplies the material for learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines early communication, physical development and social learning with the beginnings of reading, writing and number. At Copthill, adult-guided activities sit alongside children’s own choices. Cutting, threading and sculpting exercise small hand movements, while larger equipment develops whole-body coordination.

Dimensions is the named framework for adapting activities to individual children. A play tray can feature dinosaurs or diggers, with flowers or bears offering other starting points. Topics change each term, including friendships, pets and the environment. Specialist sessions bring French, PE and music into the early-years experience, while painting, baking and pottery offer further ways to make and experiment.

The woods and Quad become learning spaces too. In March 2025, pre-school children squeezed citrus fruit in the Quad while practising the /o/ sound, counting pips and comparing juice quantities. During February 2025, magnifying glasses took them searching for spiders around the woodland straw house. These activities connect sounds, numbers and observation with things children can handle and investigate.

Technology deserves attention alongside that outdoor emphasis. The January 2025 ISI inspection identified weaker development of technological skills across all age groups and recommended closer oversight of this learning.

Care and Support

Weekly observations reach parents through Tapestry, providing examples of learning that families can continue at home. Calm has a place in the day too: mindful pauses encourage slower breathing, screen use stays below 15 minutes daily, and younger children who need naps are encouraged to sleep.

The January 2025 ISI inspection found that early-years arrangements for medication, allergies, accidents, health and supervision supported children’s wellbeing. It also described inclusive teaching, illustrated by books showing children with hearing aids and a doll wearing hearing aids. Representation therefore reaches into the play materials themselves.

Food and drinks carry a daily charge. Outdoor lunches are part of the pre-school routine, so eating can share the same setting as exploration rather than always taking children indoors.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat Reception as a separate admissions step and apply through the school’s admissions team. Accepting a formal main-school offer requires an Acceptance Form and receipt of a refundable deposit; families should keep that process distinct from their early-years place.

Exploring the main school and using its specialist teachers and facilities gives children familiarity with the wider setting. That is useful preparation for a change of classroom, rather than an admissions entitlement.

Practical Information

For 2026/2027, Nursery and Pre-School operate term-time days from 08:15 to 15:15. Separate holiday weeks include nursery children, including 19–23 October and 14–18 December 2026.

Eligible families can access 15 funded hours across Monday, Friday and Thursday afternoon. A limited number of 30-hour funded places provide 18 funded hours across three days. Those distinctions matter when matching funding to a working week.

The Enhanced Curriculum carries a weekly charge and includes Forest School and specialist teaching. Children attending two or more days weekly can experience every part of that programme at least once during the week. Opting out is restricted to children attending on Mondays or Fridays. Ask the school for current charges, including food and drinks.

Waterproofs and wellies are standard equipment. For enquiries or an individual tour, contact admissions@copthill.com or 01780 757 506.
