Known in the sixteenth century for hemp cultivation and rope-making on the south bank of the Mersey, Stockport grew through one of the British Isles' earliest mechanised silk factories to become the hatting capital of England, exporting more than six million hats a year by 1884. Where the rivers Goyt and Tame merge to form the Mersey in the south-east corner of Greater Manchester, the town's Victorian scale is most legible in Stockport Viaduct, whose 27 brick arches have carried the main line railway over the river since 1840. Around 295,000 people live across the metropolitan borough today.
Bramhall and Davenport are among the most sought-after residential corners of the borough for families weighing school catchments, while Hazel Grove draws parents competing for secondary and grammar places to the south. Edgeley and Poynton extend the residential reach westward and southward, popular with families across the full range of school sectors in the borough. Stockport station serves Northern and Avanti West Coast trains with Manchester Piccadilly under ten minutes away.
