Nursery at The Glebe Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Paint, play dough and daily outdoor play give The Glebe’s nursery a practical, hands-on character. Children have opportunities to make things, get messy and spend time outside. Comfortable clothes matter here.

The nursery forms part of The Glebe Primary School on Pulford Road in Norton, with provision for children aged three and four. Its staffing includes a nursery teacher within the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage team. Morning and afternoon sessions sit alongside a longer attendance pattern, giving families different ways to organise the nursery day.

The Nursery Day

Making and exploring are concrete parts of nursery life: the uniform guidance mentions glue, painting and play dough, while the school includes daily outdoor play in its early years activities. These give children opportunities to handle materials and be physically active, rather than spending the whole session on seated tasks.

The Early Years Foundation Stage, or EYFS, is the nursery’s curriculum context. Early number learning is one identifiable strand. At the March 2025 inspection, Ofsted found that nursery children had opportunities to build number knowledge and could explain their learning confidently. This makes talking about numbers part of learning, alongside doing activities.

Classroom charters add a specific social element. Each EYFS class selects two articles from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, displays them in language children can understand and involves children in choosing them. Adults and children mark the charter with a picture, symbol or signature. The classroom display gives them a shared reference for discussing rights and responsibilities.

Care and Support

In March 2025, early years children adapted readily to classroom routines, sustained attention and waited for their turn in conversations and play. For a child beginning group education, those habits matter alongside the activities themselves.

Settling has included opportunities to meet staff before starting. In May 2019, new nursery families attended introductory meetings, with Stay and Play sessions planned before their September start. That was a staged introduction to the nursery, rather than a single first-day encounter.

Support for additional needs sits within the school’s SEND arrangements. Class teachers and the SEND coordinator monitor children’s needs; support can include teaching assistant groups, individual work with outside agencies and extra adult help. Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy and the Educational Psychology Service are named partners. Families therefore have a school support structure through which to discuss their child’s needs.

Food guidance includes fruit provided across the school. A September 2021 notice also established a nut-free rule covering food in lunches, bags and coats because some children have airborne nut allergies.

Moving On to Reception

Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. The school directs families to Stockton Borough Council’s school admissions information and the school office. Treat the nursery choice and the later Reception application as separate decisions.

Practical Information

Session times. The school-day timetable gives mornings as 8:30am to 11:30am, afternoons as 12:30pm to 3:30pm, and 30-hour provision as 8:30am to 2:30pm with an optional extension to 3:30pm. The term-dates page instead gives mornings as 8:45am to 11:45am. Confirm the morning arrangement before planning drop-off.

Funding. The funding page describes 15 nursery hours each week, with partner providers supplying remaining entitlement, including stretched arrangements. This differs from the timetable’s on-site 30-hour pattern, so confirm which arrangement applies when booking.

Nursery applications can be emailed to the school. Uniform combines grey or black bottoms, a red or white polo shirt and a red cardigan or sweatshirt without a hood. Sturdy footwear and a coat are required; jogging bottoms help with independent toileting, and spare clothes are welcome. Parking nearby is limited. The Glebe shops permit school visitors to use their car park, with a connecting path to Pulford Road.
